Wrexham’s ‘top’ squad determined to deliver

Ben Sheaf says maintaining the club’s upward trajectory has been a significant motivating factor for Wrexham’s current squad.

On the back of securing an historic third successive promotion last year, the Red Dragons made 13 signings.

Phil Parkinson’s new-look group are proving to be genuine play-off challengers in the Championship this season, with Wrexham just a point outside the top six.

“The club over the last few years has only gone one way. We want to keep that trajectory,” said Sheaf.

“It’s a big ask, but I think within the squad it’s definitely something we believe we can do.”

Such was their squad overhaul in the summer, Parkinson’s men took time to adapt to life in the Championship.

But Wrexham are currently on a four-game winning streak in the league – their best ever sequence in the second tier – and are unbeaten in their past 10 Championship fixtures on home soil.

“I think it was only a matter of time before we started to click and started playing some good stuff,” explained Sheaf.

“We just seem to be finding our feet a little bit now and everyone’s getting to know each other a little bit better. We’re finding our form at a good time.

“This league’s obviously not easy, it’s not going to be straightforward from now to the end of the season.

“But I think if we keep doing the things we’re doing and adding to that, we could definitely give ourselves a right chance to continue to win games and move up the league.”

Sheaf has been a pivotal figure since joining the club from Coventry City on transfer deadline day in September.

And with players including Issa Kabore, Andy Cannon, Danny Ward and Jay Rodriguez returning from injury to bolster Parkinson’s options, the 27-year-old feels Wrexham’s standard in training and matches will continue to improve.

“We’ve got a really strong squad, a really top, top Championship squad,” he said.

“There’s a lot of competition for places and that’s only going to make training better and then when it comes to games, people are going to need to perform well to keep playing.

“Having multiple players in every position definitely helps, especially if you can rotate and freshen it up every now and again.”

Wrexham return to league action against Norwich City on Saturday (15:00 GMT) on the back of an eye-catching victory over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

Parkinson’s men beat Sean Dyche’s Premier League side 4-3 on penalties following a 3-3 draw between the sides – and Sheaf feels the hosts were worthy winners at the Stok Cae Ras.

“It was definitely a memorable night for the club and I think we deserved to go through,” said Sheaf.

“The atmosphere and the night itself was definitely a memorable one, so we’re into the next round and looking forward to hopefully progressing through the next game as well.”

Wrexham’s reward for dumping out Forest is a home fourth-round tie against Championship promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town.

“It’s a tough draw. They’re going well in the league at the moment. I think they’re finding their rhythm a little bit,” Sheaf added.

“But being at home and our record here of late, that’s definitely going to give us an advantage. They’re a top team, it’ll be a tough game, but we’re looking forward to it.”
