The Montreal Canadiens were 9-3-2 and riding a five-game win streak into Tuesday night at the Bell Centre. The Winnipeg Jets arrived 4-8-3 and winless in nine (0-7-2), fresh off a 7-0 loss in Carolina. The Habs led 4-0 with under three minutes left, but the Jets did the unthinkable and came back to win 5-4 in overtime.
Owen Beck opened the scoring at 3:05 of the first, taking feeds from Florian and Arber Xhekaj and beating Stuart Skinner over the glove for his first goal of the season. Josh Anderson made it 2-0 at 18:18, working off the right wall into the slot and lifting a backhand past Skinner.
On a 5-on-3 early in the second, Noah Dobson’s one-timer produced a rebound Cole Caufield buried at 4:00. Caufield then caught Skinner cheating off the near post and roofed a sharp-angle shot 46 seconds into the third for 4-0, his second power-play goal.
Then the Winnipeg Jets scored four times in 2:06. Tyrel Bauer got his first NHL goal at 17:21 after Dylan DeMelo’s dump-in bounced off the left boards. Morgan Barron beat Jacob Fowler off the crossbar on a 2-on-1 at 18:03. Kyle Connor one-timed a Mark Scheifele pass at 19:00, then scored again at 19:27 with Skinner pulled, the puck going in off Dobson’s stick. Dylan Samberg ended it at 3:30 of overtime.
3 most disappointing Canadiens players from 5-4 loss to Jets
#3. Alexandre Carrier
Carrier took a tripping minor on Cole Perfetti with the Winnipeg net already empty, which gave the Jets a six-on-four, and Connor scored the 4-4 goal on that power play. A veteran D-man cannot put his stick in Perfetti’s feet with a one-goal lead that late. He had blocked four shots before that.
#2. Noah Dobson
Canadiens D-man Dobson was in the shooting lane on Connor’s one-timer and the puck went in off his stick for the tying goal, a deflection a top-pairing blueliner has to prevent in the last minute. He also took a first-period hooking minor on Gabriel Vilardi. His point shot did set up Caufield’s 3-0 goal.
#1. Lane Hutson
Gabriel Vilardi stripped Lane Hutson along the boards in overtime, and two passes later Samberg was scoring from the right circle. That giveaway ended the game, and it capped a night when the Canadiens gave the puck away 14 times to Winnipeg’s 10, per Sofascore. Even after assisting on Cole Caufield‘s second goal, Hutson ended the game with a -2 rating.
