Manchester United are eyeing a surprise move for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, according to The Telegraph.
The Red Devils are planning to land a marquee number six to replace Casemiro, whose contract expires at the end of the ongoing campaign.
United are also keen on landing a central midfielder to compete with Kobbie Mainoo and reports claim that Fernandes has been closely monitored.
The Portuguese ace joined the Hammers from Southampton last summer and has been pivotal to their fight to avoid relegation from the top-flight.
Even if the Hammers are relegated, they are determined to keep him, but their resolve could be seriously tested by the Mancunian giants this summer.
Fernandes was signed for around £38m from the Saints, and it may take at least £50m to test the Hammers’ ambition to keep him beyond the summer.
The former Sporting CP man has reportedly been recommended to United’s hierarchy by Bruno Fernandes, given his work rate and fine distribution.
