These Are the World’s Best-Connected Airports for 2026

Each year, the OAG Megahubs Index publishes their ranking of the world’s best-connected airports, revealing which aviation hubs are best for getting us on our merry way—wherever its is we’re going.

Within the index, airport connectivity is ranked across various global categories: Top 50 Most Connected Airports; Top 25 Most Connected Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) Airports; Top 25 Most Connected US Airports; and Top 10 Most Connected Airports (International) by region.

Ascertaining the world’s most connected airports is a mammoth mathematical task. To do so, flight data specialists at OAG, an aviation analytics provider, crunch the data from the 100 largest international airports over a 12-month period and calculate the number of possible connections between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window. The top ranking airports—which OAG calls “megahubs”—have “the highest ratio of possible scheduled international connections to the number of destinations served by the airport,” according to the study.

Which airports came out on top?

In 2025, London Heathrow (LHR) retained its title as the world’s most connected airport for the third consecutive year, with more than 59,000 connections to 226 destinations on the busiest day of operations. Istanbul Airport (IST) saw one of the greatest increases from eighth position in 2024 to second in 2025, while Kuala Lumpur (KUL) was the best-connected Asian airport, in joint fourth place globally with Frankfurt (FRA).

However, geopolitical tensions and new airport growth, among other factors, have led to significant movement in the 2026 rankings.

London Heathrow has officially been overtaken by Istanbul, which was ranked as the most connected airport in the world for the first time. As a result of connections to 337 global destinations—many serviced by Turkish Airlines, the world’s best-connected airline—the eighth-busiest airport globally acts as a gateway to much of the world.

London Heathrow only slipped by one place to second, with potential connections on the busiest day of operations between September 2025 and August 2026 falling by 6% compared to the year before. Middle East schedules have undoubtedly affected Heathrow’s position, with Istanbul often serving as an alternative to hubs that experienced flight cancellations and delays as the conflict persisted.

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) has seen both capacity and destinations grow, claiming third position, while Kuala Lumpur retains fourth position—despite potential connections falling slightly since last year, destinations served have increased from 151 to 154.

Meanwhile, in the US, most of the airport rankings have remain unchanged since 2026, with Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Denver International (DEN), and Charlotte (CLT) ranking once again as the nation’s top five most well-connected airports.
