Cardinals upset Rams as Eagles lose – five things from NFL week six

Week six in the NFL produced some unlikely heroes as the Arizona Cardinals pulled off the biggest upset of the season so far.

Kicker Chad Ryland scored all of Arizona’s points at the Los Angeles Rams to leave the former Super Bowl favourites bottom of the NFC West division.

The Philadelphia Eagles continued to struggle but their former Super Bowl rivals the Kansas City Chiefs remained unbeaten.

The Cleveland Browns maintained their surprise start while the Houston Texans concluded this year’s London series by winning a thriller at Wembley.

Here are five things you need to know from Sunday’s action.

Rams need to stop the rot

The Los Angeles Rams started the season as the clearest Super Bowl favourites in nine years but were replaced by the San Francisco 49ers after last Monday’s overtime defeat by the Buffalo Bills.

They cut kicker Harrison Mevis on Tuesday and signed Blake Grupe from the New York Jets’ practice squad, and although Grupe’s field goal opened the scoring against Arizona, he injured a knee while making a tackle from the ensuing kick-off.

The Rams edged back in front with 47 seconds remaining as punter Ethan Evans took on the kicking duties to add the extra point after Colby Parkinson’s touchdown.

But Arizona hit straight back and a career-high sixth field goal by Chad Ryland clinched an 18-16 win as time expired.

After just three wins last season, the Cardinals now have two this year and both have come at SoFi Stadium having also beaten the Los Angeles Chargers in week one.

Arizona also crept above the Rams in a division which features the unbeaten 49ers and defending champions the Seattle Seahawks.

“We’ve got to be able to figure it out and it starts with me,” said the Rams’ head coach Sean McVay.

Walker continues to set pace

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reached 100 regular-season wins in his 131st start, tying Tom Brady’s record.

After missing out on last season’s play-offs, the Chiefs boosted their roster by signing the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player Kenneth Walker and he rushed for another 128 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s 22-6 win over the Chargers.

The running back now leads the NFL with 665 rushing yards, a record from a player’s first five games with a new team, and the Chiefs visit his former team Seattle next Sunday.

Kansas City and the Minnesota Vikings are now 5-0 while San Francisco – the only other unbeaten team after five wins – are at home to Washington on Monday night.

The Buffalo Bills held on for a 33-30 win at the Las Vegas Raiders to improve to 5-1 while Caleb Williams returned from a hamstring injury to help the Chicago Bears to a 31-23 win at the Atlanta Falcons.

Eagles begin Hurts absence with loss

The Philadelphia Eagles were already struggling with injuries before last Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville at Tottenham.

They then revealed that quarterback Jalen Hurts played that game with a superficial blood clot in his calf and a follow-up ultrasound showed that it had moved.

The 2025 Super Bowl winner was then placed on injured reserve so will miss at least four weeks, with back-up Tanner McKee coming in for his third NFL start at home to the Carolina Panthers.

Tight end Tommy Tremble scored his first two touchdowns of the season as the Panthers won 25-14, meaning the Eagles have lost four straight games for the first time since Nick Sirianni became head coach in 2021.

Offensive linemen Lane Johnson (retirement) and Cam Jurgens (traded to Baltimore) both left the team two weeks ago and after seeing the Eagles reach two of the past four Super Bowls, many Philly fans fear this could be the end of an era.

They face all three of their divisional rivals over the next three weeks.

Hunter pulls off rare feat at Wembley

After last week’s last-gasp win over the Eagles, it was a role reversal for the Jacksonville Jaguars as they remained in London to face the Houston Texans.

The divisional match-up produced the highest-scoring London game since 2015, with Ka’imi Fairbairn’s field goal securing a 34-31 win for Houston, but it was a landmark day for Jacksonville’s Travis Hunter.

The second overall draft pick in 2025, Hunter came into the league determined to become its first full-time two-way player in 30 years and in his 13th NFL game, he made a significant impact on both offence and defence for the first time.

The 23-year-old, who plays as a wide receiver and cornerback, became the first player to claim a touchdown catch and an interception in the same game since Brian Dawkins (Philadelphia Eagles) in 2002 – and the fourth since the league merger in 1970.

Hunter made both plays in the fourth quarter, with his pick leading to a Cam Little field goal which made it 31-31, before Fairbairn clinched Houston’s second win of the season while the Jags slipped to 4-2.

Browns are surprise division leaders

The Baltimore Ravens had a divisional match-up at the Cleveland Browns and star running back Derrick Henry had a crucial fumble in the fourth quarter.

That allowed Cleveland running back Audric Estime, who started the week on Minnesota’s practice squad, to punch in a touchdown before Andre Szmyt’s second game-winning field goal in three weeks gave the Browns a 13-10 victory.

After being booed by Cleveland fans in pre-season, quarterback Deshaun Watson has now led the Browns to a 4-2 start and they are surprise leaders of the AFC North on a tie-breaker.

Baltimore and the Pittsburgh Steelers are also 4-2, with the Steelers having come back from 16-3 down in the fourth quarter to win 26-19 in overtime at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Next up for Cleveland is a trip to the Tennessee Titans, who fought back in the final quarter to beat the Indianapolis Colts 26-20 for their first victory of the season.

That means the only teams without a win are the Miami Dolphins (0-5) and the Los Angeles Chargers (0-6).
