“That ‘old man’ believed in Jake Bauers” – Royals legend defends Brewers skipper Pat Murphy amid criticism for throwing shade at Yankees

This post was originally published on this site.

Jake Bauers handed Pat Murphy the ball from the final out at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, and Milwaukee’s manager marked the franchise’s first World Series title with a parting shot at the New York Yankees.

In the clip, from the Brewers’ 4-1 Game 5 win over Tampa Bay, the 67-year-old Murphy told Bauers, a pending free agent, to remember how Milwaukee does things, unlike the 2023 Yankees team where he said the players were all out for themselves.

Criticism followed, much of it from New York. Podcast host Mark Titus of “Mostly Sports” called Murphy out for his comments, claiming Bauers should have “told the old man to shut up.”

Eric Hosmer, a four-time Gold Glove first baseman on Kansas City’s 2015 champions and now host of the Diggin Deep Podcast, posted to X the next day, defending Murphy.

“Come on now ‼️ That “old man” believed in Jake (probably when Jake didn’t even believe in himself) and continued challenging Jake with more and more playing time on the game’s biggest stages. Now Bauers is back to being a dawg, NLCS mvp, World Champion and as confident as ever.”

“He has an opportunity to continue his career when he was ready to pack it in and take it to the house. Everybody knows the reality, Jake’s set himself and his family up for generational wealth and there’s a good chance it’s not going to be with Milwaukee. That “old man” changed his life forever!” Hosmer posted.

Ex-Brewers outfielder explains how Pat Murphy built a winning culture in Milwaukee

On Oct. 23’s episode of “Foul Territory,” former Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Geoff Jenkins explained how Pat Murphy has built a winning culture in Milwaukee.

“I think Murphy has created a culture here,” Jenkins said. “I think all the guys have bought into it and they’ve created that culture in the minor league. So now, if you bring a guy up, they already know what the culture’s like, how you have to buy in, and how you have to be a part of it. And if you want to play, that’s the way we play baseball.

“So, I really appreciate that. It’s hard to create and produce that. I’ve been in Philly where it was like that, and I’ve been in some Milwaukee clubhouses, where it wasn’t like that. So, for Murph to pull this off and for it to be, this is the standard and guys buy in. It’s pretty special.”

Having already won the NL manager of the year in 2024 and 2025, Pat Murphy is far and away the leading candidate to win the award once again this year, having led the Brewers to 103 regular season wins and the first championship in franchise history.
