Browns HC Todd Monken drops cryptic Shedeur Sanders update as Dillon Gabriel gets bad news ahead of Week 8 game vs Steelers

Shedeur Sanders has served as the backup quarterback option for the Cleveland Browns this year. Todd Monken and his team named veteran Deshaun Watson as the starter after his return from injury. Under him, the team has put up a 5-2 record after last week’s victory over the Tennessee Titans.

However, there have been some questions about Sanders’ spot on the QB depth chart after Dillon Gabriel was activated off the Injured Reserve on Oct. 27. On Friday, according to Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot, coach Todd Monken provided an update on the situation. Coach Prime’s son will remain the backup to Watson. However, Monken gave a cryptic response on whether Gabriel or Taylen Green will be the third-string option.

Thanks for the submission!

“Browns Todd Monken confirmed that Shedeur Sanders is the No. 2 quarterback this week will Dillon Gabriel back on the roster, and he wouldn’t say if Gabriel or Taylen Green will be inactive 3rd QB,” Cabot tweeted.

Both Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel were drafted in 2025. Last season, the ex-Oregon star took over as QB1 in Week 5 after the team’s disappointing start to the season. Gabriel recorded 937 passing yards and seven TDs in 10 appearances.

Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders was named the starter after Gabriel suffered a concussion in Week 11. He remained the QB1 for the remainder of the season and posted 1,400 passing yards and seven TDs in eight games.

NFL analyst shares his thoughts on Shedeur Sanders’ future with the Browns

On Tuesday’s episode of ‘ESPN Cleveland,’ analyst Tony Grossi believes that there is a chance Todd Monken and Andrew Berry might trade Shedeur Sanders.

“If there are no injuries and there is no demand for one, maybe at some point in the season, they do try to waive (Taylen) Green and get him to the practice squad,” Grossi said. “They let the quarterback market settle and they see the scene and nobody needs a quarterback right now, so let’s try to sneak him.

“I think they can do that with him. I think if there was a demand for Shedeur, he would definitely listen.”

The Browns currently have four players in the quarterback room after drafting Taylen Green with the No. 182 pick this year.

The Browns are next scheduled to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. ET.
