French side Lens welcome Italian club Como to Stade Bollaert-Delelis in UEFA Champions League league-phase action on Wednesday. This will be the first-ever meeting between these teams.

Lens are ninth in Ligue 1, with 13 points from nine games, seven points behind first-placed Paris Saint-Germain.

Les Sang et Or are fast falling out of the title conversation in France, and results like their 1-0 away loss to Lille on Friday are not helpful in that regard.

With four wins, one draw, and four losses, Lens have been inconsistent, but coach Yannick Cahuzac will be pleased to see that three of their four victories have come in their last four top-flight matches, indicating an upturn in form.

In the UEFA Champions League, Lens have earned only one win from their three matches, beating Czech side Slavia Prague 3-2 away from home in the first matchday.

The French club have lost the other two games without scoring a single goal, losing 2-0 at home to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon and 3-0 away to Belgian champions Club Brugge in their most recent European match on 21 October.

Lens have therefore earned three points from their first three games (with five matches left in the league phase), leaving them 27th out of 36 teams, just outside the top 24, which is the requirement for clubs looking to move on in the competition.

Meanwhile, Como have experienced a meteoric rise from the Italian fourth division in 2019 to Serie A contenders taking part in the UEFA Champions League this season.

The Lariani are fourth in the Italian top flight on 23 points, only five points away from runaway league leaders Lazio.

Como have won four consecutive Serie A games, defeating Fiorentina, Sassuolo, Torino, and Venezia as they surged up the table, with their most recent 1-0 win over Venezia coming courtesy of a converted first-half penalty from captain Lucas Da Cunha at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Sunday.

Como’s first-ever Champions League campaign has also been a success thus far, with two comprehensive wins and a narrow 3-2 away loss against Dutch side Feyenoord allowing Cesc Fabregas’ side to sit ninth in the league-phase table, tied with European giants including Barcelona, Manchester City, and Borussia Dortmund.

The Lariani kicked off their campaign with a 4-1 home win over German club RB Leipzig, and they beat English heavyweights Manchester United by the same scoreline in their most recent league-phase match at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on 21 October.

Argentinian star player Nico Paz netted twice, while prolific striker Anastasios Douvikas and Spaniard Jacobo Ramon also scored to put Como 4-0 up, with Joshua Zirkzee’s 91st-minute goal proving to be a mere consolation for Man United.

Lens vs Como head-to-head stats and key numbers

  • This will be the first-ever match between Lens and Como, with the two teams looking to begin their rivalry on a winning note.
  • After this match, Lens will play league-phase games against Leipzig, Bodo/Glimt, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
  • Following this game against Lens, Como’s remaining league-phase opponents include AEK Athens, Real Betis, defending European champions Paris Saint-Germain, and Barcelona.

Lens vs Como prediction

Como are expected to control possession using their typical fluid passing style, with short passes and combinations between creative players such as Paz and Da Cunha allowing them to build up attacking movements and test the hosts.

Lens are likely to rely on their wing-backs to use the full width of the pitch, stretching Como’s defensive line and aiming to catch the Italians on the counterattack.

Beating seasoned Champions League contenders Man United was a full-circle moment for Fabregas’ charges, and we expect Como to build on that momentum with an away victory over Lens.

Prediction: Lens 1-2 Como
