Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin offered an update on Quinn Hughes’ contract situation on Wednesday, saying he has not spoken with the defenseman’s representatives in a long time.
Appearing on The Chad Hartman Show, Guerin said there is currently nothing really to talk about regarding an extension:
“To be quite honest, I had not talked to them about this in a long time,” Guerin said of contract talks with Hughes and his agent, Pat Brisson. “There’s nothing to talk about right now. What am I going to do, say ‘Please, please, please’?”
Guerin’s comments quickly drew reactions from fans on X, with one tweeting:
“Billy knows he’s walking, and there’s nothing he can do about it. It’s all about deciding if it’s worth keeping him for a cup run or try to recoup some assets.”
Another chimed in:
“Yeah, Billy, with what you gave up, you ought to be on your knees, begging and pleading. If you give up four number ones for what amounts to a one-year rental, they’ll be looking for a new GM in Minnesota.”
Here are some of the other top reactions on X:
“Did anyone actually listen to the radio hit that this came from? The tone in his voice tells a different story. Basically BG is not giving up any info and doesn’t want to talk about it,” a third fan wrote.
“Quinn just being a big bro. I’m gonna win before either of you,” one X user wrote.
“And he thinks Billy G is gonna put him on the next olympic team? Gonna be sitting at home watching Luke take his spot,” added another.
Quinn Hughes remains eligible to sign extension

The Norris Trophy-winning defenseman has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1, but talks have gone quiet recently.
Guerin’s latest comments mark a clear shift in tone from earlier in the offseason, when the Wild GM repeatedly expressed confidence that an agreement could eventually be reached.
Quinn Hughes himself has stayed measured in his public remarks, stressing that he is focused on helping Minnesota win right now while keeping an open mind about his future.
With the season underway and no active negotiations taking place, both sides appear content to let the situation play out. Hughes joined the Wild following the blockbuster trade with the Vancouver Canucks in December last year.
