“Caleb Williams is the perfect quarterback”: Tom Brady lays out why Bears star is a better fit for Ben Johnson than Jared Goff was at Lions

NFL legend Tom Brady spent 23 seasons finding ways to make a defense guess. He sees the same idea at work in Chicago. Following the Chicago Bears’ 34-17 win in Seattle, Brady said Caleb Williams is exactly the quarterback Ben Johnson needs.

Williams has helped the Bears to a 6-2 start this season. Brady credited the fit between Johnson’s scheme and Williams’ mobility and used Jared Goff’s years in Detroit to explain how long that understanding takes to build on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

“I think Caleb Williams is the perfect quarterback for that Ben Johnson offense because Ben likes to do things a little bit unconventionally,” Brady said. “He likes to move the pocket a little to the right, a little to the left, so that pass rush can never really get a beat on you.”

“Ben Johnson uses his skill players as well as any coordinator in the league, so they are just doing unbelievable things.”

Brady said the trust takes a couple of seasons, and he used Goff’s years under Johnson in Detroit, where Johnson was offensive coordinator from 2022 through 2024, as the template. Goff threw for 96 touchdowns and 31 interceptions across those three Lions seasons.

Caleb Williams emerges as MVP contender after stellar outing against Seahawks

Through five starts, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has completed 70.9% of his passes for 1,267 yards, six touchdowns and one interception, a 104.6 passer rating. NFL.com’s Week 9 MVP tracker ranks him second in the league in completion percentage and second in QBR at 78.9.

Seattle was meant to be the test. Mike Macdonald’s defense entered Week 8 allowing a league-low 144.4 passing yards per game, and no quarterback had reached 200 yards against it. Williams completed 24-of-34 attempts for 247 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.

Although Williams missed three games with a torn right hamstring earlier in the season, he has been one of the best quarterbacks this year.
