A bond crisis is heading France’s way, adding to Emmanuel Macron’s troubles as rioting sweeps through the country. However, if you’re feeling particularly brave, French bonds do look like a bargain.

The French bond crisis has been simmering for years. The country has not run a primary budget surplus since the mid-1970s, it has been spending way more than it collects in tax revenues and a stagnating economy can no longer sustain the debt burden. Even from the UK, where the debt load is also hard to afford, the numbers are sobering. The deficit is expected to run at 5.4% of GDP this year even though there is no immediate crisis for the government to deal with.
