Bundesliga football resumes this weekend, with Hamburger SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach set to open matchday nine at the Volksparkstadion on Friday. The two teams arrive in contrasting form, but both will be hoping to head into the international break on a positive note by securing a favorable result.
Hamburger SV picked up wins either side of the last international break, putting together three consecutive Bundesliga victories in the same season for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign. However, Die Rothosen’s earlier-season struggles have returned to haunt them, with their recent results far from ideal.
Thanks for the submission!
Merlin Polzin’s men hosted Eintracht Frankfurt in the second round of the DFB-Pokal last week, losing 3-1. HSV then had the chance to exact immediate revenge when the two sides met again in the league at the weekend.
However, Hamburger appeared to have learnt little from their cup defeat, slumping to another 3-1 loss at the hands of Die Adler.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, meanwhile, endured a nightmare start to the season. Die Fohlen failed to win any of their first six league games, a run that prompted a change in the managerial position midway through.
New boss Alexander Blessin also featured in Gladbach’s losing streak, losing his first two games in charge. However, the German manager has gradually begun to get a tune out of the side and will be looking to maintain that progress this weekend.
Following back-to-back victories in the league and cup, Mönchengladbach hosted Paderborn last time out. They were far from their best against the newly promoted outfit but still managed to salvage a point as the contest ended goalless.
Hamburger SV vs Borussia Mönchengladbach Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Neither side could gain the upper hand in last season’s Bundesliga meetings, with both fixtures ending 0-0.
- Mönchengladbach have not won a Bundesliga match at the Volksparkstadion since 2013.
- Die Fohlen currently hold the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 22 goals in just eight matches.
- A win on Friday would see HSV record three consecutive Bundesliga home victories for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.
Hamburger SV vs Borussia Mönchengladbach Prediction
Despite their contrasting fortunes, HSV hold a slight edge heading into this encounter, largely thanks to their home advantage.
We expect Gladbach’s recent upturn in form to make them a difficult opponent, but their defensive frailties could ultimately prove costly.
Prediction: Hamburger SV 2-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach
