It’s been an extraordinary night for the Democrats so far in the US midterms.

They have taken control of the Senate and are projected to take control of the House of Representatives too, according to the BBC’s partner CBS News.

Senate

The results in the Senate are beyond what the Democrats would have expected. North Carolina was a likely pick-up but South Carolina was a huge shock and Kansas had not returned a Democratic senator since 1932.

Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Maine have also turned blue. There is one toss-up seat to come in Alaska and even Mississippi is now on a knife edge, according to CBS News.

Polls before the election saw South Carolina as leaning Republican. It had been a deep red seat for many years, last returning a Democratic senator in 1998.

House

The BBC’s partner CBS News projected the Democrats would win the House just after 03:00 GMT on Wednesday (22:00 EST Tuesday). The Democrats are making the gains they need to take control but have their sights set on a much bigger victory.

Two significant seats are Florida 14 and Florida 25 which the Democrats have held. This is a blow to the Republicans’ attempt to redraw the boundaries in their favour.

The redistricting saw both districts move from having a majority of 2024 Kamala Harris voters to having a majority of people who voted for Donald Trump.

Florida 22, which was also redrawn to favour the Republicans, saw a victory for the Democrats too.

Hispanic voters turn to Democrats in Florida

Hispanic voters look to be one of the key groups in the elections in Florida. A huge poll of voters suggests that this group backed the Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon by 55% to 44% for the Republican Ashley Moody.

This is a turnaround from the estimated 55% of Hispanic voters who backed Donald Trump in 2024.

The poll also asked what issues voters were most concerned about. It suggests that across the country the economy was the biggest issue, followed by the state of democracy.

When voters were asked if Donald Trump’s policies impacted economic conditions, the poll suggests more that two-thirds believe they had made things worse.
