Indian legend declares availability for Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026-27 after IND vs SL 2026 ODIs: Reports

Veteran India batter Rohit Sharma has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be available for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026-27 towards the end of the year. The former India captain, who is currently with the squad ahead of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, could join the Mumbai squad after India’s home ODI series against Sri Lanka ends on December 19, while the List A tournament begins on December 14.

Rohit Sharma has a brief window to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026-27 before India’s three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe starts on January 3. The league stage games are spread across Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Ranchi and Rajkot, with the knockouts to take place in Visakhapatnam.

With his involvement with the Indian team for the home series against Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma might miss the first few fixtures for Mumbai. He could make his first appearance in the fourth league match of the competition, against Saurashtra on December 21. Mumbai open their campaign against Services on December 14 and also face Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand while the Sri Lanka series is on.

“He has informed us that he will be playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and to consider him available after India’s three-ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. How many matches he will be available for, he will inform us later,” an MCA source told the Indian Express.

Since Rohit Sharma features in only one format, the game time in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026-27 could prove to be valuable, especially since India don’t have any ODIs scheduled in early 2027 after the Zimbabwe home series. The calendar is packed with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027, before the focus shifts back to the ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma featured twice for Mumbai in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26

Amid the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) strict mandate regarding participation in domestic cricket, Rohit Sharma featured in the previous Vijay Hazare Trophy season, his first in the tournament since 2018. He made a stunning 155 off 94 balls against Sikkim in his comeback game, but followed it two days later with a golden duck against Uttarakhand.

It remains to be seen whether Virat Kohli follows him into the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026-27 for Delhi. Much like the Hitman, the senior batter had featured in two matches last season, ending a 16-year break from List-A domestic cricket.
