“It’s still crazy to me”: Ex-Eagles LB voices complaints about Kyle Shanahan not being in Coach of the Year talks

The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first loss of the season after a 29-20 defeat against the Atlanta Falcons in their Week 7 matchup over the weekend in Atlanta.

Despite the loss, the 49ers have been one of the best teams after the first seven weeks of the 2026 season. WFAN host Zach Gelb named Kevin O’Connell, John Harbaugh and Todd Monken as Coach of the Year contenders.

However, former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho complained about the absence of 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan in the Coach of the Year talks despite navigating several injuries to his star players.

“It’s still crazy to me that Kyle Shanahan doesn’t get mentioned in these convos: Bosa, Deebo, Stribling, Pearsall, Juice, Stout, Collins and Evans have all missed time,” Acho wrote. “Today: The full list above + McCaffrey missed time. + Shanahan has wins over: Rams, Seahawks, Broncos.”

Shanahan is in the 10th season with the franchise and is chasing a postseason spot for a sixth time. His team finished third in the NFC West last season and was eliminated in the divisional round by the Seattle Seahawks.

Former Eagles LB expressed surprise on lack of recognition for Kyle Shanahan

The 49ers reached the Super Bowl in 2023 after finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record. Emmanuel Acho expressed surprise that Kyle Shanahan has never been named Coach of the Year despite establishing the 49ers as strong Super Bowl contenders during his tenure.

“Fair point, but the Niners were expected to finish 3rd in their division,” Acho wrote. “I think we don’t acknowledge the brilliance of Shanahan because he has set the bar so high. But Shanahan’s wins & performances are better than any win the Giants have. The fact Shanahan has never won COY is wild.”

The 49ers committed four turnovers in their loss against the Falcons on Sunday. However, they will look to rectify things when they host the Las Vegas Raiders after their bye week.
