The Miz has a theory about the WWE names who never seem to leave the top of the card, and Sami Zayn is his current example.
Speaking to Q104.3 New York (h/t Wrestling Headlines), the former WWE Champion said the gap between Roman Reigns, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes and everyone else comes down to handling pressure.
Thanks for the submission!
The Miz brought up Zayn’s name, and added that the current Undisputed WWE Champion is learning how much work needs to be done to be at the top in the company:
“I’ve seen so many people come and go in WWE, people thinking that, you know, these are going to be the next big stars. In some way, somehow, it just doesn’t fall in their favor, and then you sometimes see… these guys that are always at the top, and you’re wondering, why are they always at the top? There’s a special, unique ability about them. The Roman Reigns’, the CM Punk’s, the Cody Rhodes’. There’s something about them.”
The Miz added:
“The reason they’re always at the top of the tippity top is because they’re able to handle the pressure that nobody else understands what it takes to be a huge success in WWE, and Sami Zayn is finding that out right now.”
Miz knows the terrain. He walked into WrestleMania 27 as WWE Champion and left with the title still in his hands.
Zayn’s run with that pressure has been messy. His first reign lasted nine days in June, ending when CM Punk pinned him on the July 6 Raw after he had won the title from Cody Rhodes in a triple threat that also featured Gunther.
The second reign started on Sept. 11 in Mexico City, where he pinned Punk after a Helluva Kick. Zayn keeps saying he deserves respect as champion. His next match is the clearest test of whether he can carry it.
Sami Zayn has a tough outing next against Roman Reigns
Sami Zayn faces Reigns at Crown Jewel on Nov. 7 for the Men’s Crown Jewel Championship. Neither world title is on the line, only the ceremonial Crown Jewel belt, with Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship and Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship staying with their holders.
The Nov. 2 Raw at Barclays Center ended with Zayn standing over Reigns. Reigns was attacked after 946 beat down The Bloodline. Zayn then ran in and hit the Helluva Kick on The Big Dog.
His Oct. 30 defense against Trick Williams on SmackDown also showcased how Zayn deals with pressure. Johnny Gargano pulled referee Charles Robinson out of the ring and Nick Aldis restarted the match as No Disqualification. However, Zayn kept the belt with a low blow and a shot with the title.
