Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Rinky Hijikata preview
Tomas Martin Etcheverry will take on qualifier Rinky Hijikata in the third round of the Paris Masters 2026.
Etcheverry fought past Andrey Rublev in the first round here to snap his six-match losing streak. He faced eighth seed Alex de Minaur in the second round. The Argentine had lost all 20 of his previous matches against top 10 players.
Etcheverry rallied from a break down in the opening set, and then saved two set points in the 12th game to force a tie-break. He comfortably outplayed de Minaur in the tie-break to claim the opener. The two were evenly matched until 2-2 in the second set, after which Etcheverry nabbed four of the next five games to score a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win.
Hijikata booked his place in the main draw of the Paris Masters with wins over Jaime Faria and Vit Kopriva. He beat Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2 to book a second-round date with 10th seed Novak Djokovic. The qualifier from Australia simply was no match for Djokovic in the first set. The Serb broke his younger rival’s serve twice to capture the set.
They matched each other shot for shot until 3-3 in the second set. Hijikata then pulled ahead with a three-game run to take the set. The third set played out in somewhat similar fashion. The two defended their serves quite comfortably at the start, and then Hijikata bagged the last four games of the set to secure a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback win.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Rinky Hijikata prediction

Etcheverry contested his very first match against a top 10 player in May 2023. More than three years later, he finally got the better of one on his 21st attempt. He saved 12 of the 13 break points that he faced against de Minaur to finally tally his maiden top 10 win.
While Hijikata didn’t earn a top 10 scalp, beating Djokovic is certainly an accomplishment worth having. While Etcheverry had lost his last six matches prior to the Paris Masters, Hijikata had lost his last four. Both have now put themselves on the cusp of reaching their very first quarterfinal at the Masters 1000 level.
Etcheverry has a 28-27 record this year, while Hijikata has compiled a 17-22 record. The Argentine won their previous meeting in Hangzhou last year quite comfortably.
Etcheverry came within one win of reaching a Masters 1000 quarterfinal on three occasions this year. After claiming his first top 10 win, he could tick off another item from his checklist by beating Hijikata to make the last eight here.
Pick: Tomas Martin Etcheverry to win in straight sets.
