Virat Kohli produced a moment of fielding brilliance on Wednesday, plucking a sensational one-handed diving catch to dismiss Nathan Smith and tighten India’s grip on the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park.
The dismissal arrived in the 29th over off the bowling of seam bowler Anshul Kamboj. Looking to establish stability after Mitchell Santner’s departure, Smith poked tentatively at a probing good-length delivery angled outside the off stump. The ball found the outside edge and flew rapidly low to the right of slip.
Kohli, stationed in the cordon, reacted instantly with razor-sharp reflexes. Throwing his full frame parallel to the turf, the 37-year-old snatched the ball inches above the grass with an outstretched right hand.
The moment he secured the ball, Kohli sprang to his feet and broke into an animated, celebratory sprint across the infield, pumping his fists as teammates rushed to mob him. The electric reaction underscored the veteran’s trademark intensity, turning what seemed a difficult chance into a game-defining highlight.

Smith walked back after scoring just one run off nine deliveries, reducing the hosts to 115 for seven. The dismissal rewarded Kamboj for an incisive, disciplined spell and deepened New Zealand’s middle-order collapse after India opted to bowl first in chilly Auckland conditions.
Clinical India run riot to leave New Zealand reeling at Eden Park
A relentless display of seam bowling complemented by sharp fielding has placed India firmly in the driver’s seat after opting to bowl in the series opener in Auckland.
Arshdeep Singh provided the early breakthroughs by removing Will Young and Henry Nicholls, setting the tone with the new ball. Although Tim Seifert staged a counterattack with a brisk 38, Gurnoor Brar broke his resistance before snaring Kiwi wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham to trigger a middle-order wobble.
India tightened the screws further when a piece of fielding brilliance from Rohit Sharma ran out Daryl Mitchell for 28. Anshul Kamboj then tore through the lower middle order, first disturbing Mitchell Santner’s timber and subsequently dismissing Nathan Smith courtesy of a sensational diving blinder from Virat Kohli at slip. It left the hosts in dire straits at 116 for seven in the 29th over.
