Virgil van Dijk on Alexander Isak penalty claim vs Arsenal

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has said that Alexander Isak should have had a clear-cut penalty for Jurrien Timber’s foul in the box.

The Reds suffered a disappointing 1-0 Premier League loss to the Gunners at Anfield earlier today. Kai Havertz‘s early goal proved to be the match winner.

However, things could have been different had Isak been awarded a penalty. The Swede’s shirt was blatantly pulled by Timber in the box, but Isak did not make a fuss out of the situation and moved on.

VAR also ignored the incident as a result, but Van Dijk clearly feels the Reds were robbed and should have been handed the opportunity to equalise.

He said: “I think it was a clear penalty. I’ve seen it back and I’ve seen it being given. Today it wasn’t meant to be.”

The defeat means Liverpool are now nine points behind reigning champions Arsenal, who have moved to the top of the standings.
