Veteran Indian batter Rohit Sharma could not make an impact in the run chase during the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4. The Hitman was dismissed for a six-ball duck as Kyle Jamieson got the better of him in the first over itself.
Attempting to chase down a target of 186, Rohit Sharma had played out five dot balls and started to feel the pressure. Off the last ball of the over, he tried to clear mid-off, but found Mitchell Santner instead. This marks his first duck in ODI cricket in almost three years. It is to be noted that he was dismissed for a duck in the format while playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare 2025-26 season.
Rohit Sharma’s last ODI duck before the New Zealand tour came on October 8, 2023, in India’s memorable World Cup opener against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Mitchell Starc set the tone in Chennai, removing Ishan Kishan for a first-ball duck in the first over of India’s chase of 200. Josh Hazlewood doubled up in his next over. Rohit Sharma was trapped in front by a delivery that came in, reviewed, and stayed out on umpire’s call.
Shreyas Iyer went in the same over, caught at short cover, and India were 2 for 3, the first time in a men’s ODI that three of a team’s top four had been dismissed without scoring. Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) put on 165 in reply, and India won by six wickets in the end. It was his 16th duck in ODI cricket, but he went on to have a stunning World Cup campaign.
Rohit Sharma’s mediocre run in New Zealand continues with a duck in NZ vs IND 2026 1st ODI
A poor outing in the first ODI has extended Rohit Sharma’s mixed fortunes in New Zealand. Before the first ODI, he had scored 437 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.42 with four fifties. This is his first ODI duck against the Blackcaps; his previous lowest score against them was 1, which came during the infamous ODI World Cup 2019 semi-final at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Rohit Sharma’s duck has left the run-chase duties to skipper Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, batting at No. 3, from early in the piece, with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and KL Rahul still to come in a line-up with batting depth. At the time of writing, India are placed at 31-1 after five overs.
