Coco Gauff has treated Halloween as a serious fixture on her calendar for years, and this October was no different. The American shared glimpses of her eye-catching pirate costume, and her mother, Candi, weighed in on the look.
The 22-year-old is making the most of her time off after withdrawing from the Wuhan Open, where she was the defending champion. She explained that her body needed time to rest and recover after a long year, giving herself a break ahead of the WTA Finals.
Thanks for the submission!
Gauff transformed into a pirate for her first look of the holiday. She posed for pictures with a friend, who stuck to the theme by dressing up as a mermaid.
“Coming to an ocean near you 🏴☠️🗡️,” Gauff captioned her Instagram post.
The costume impressed the American’s mother, Candi, leading to a heartwarming exchange between the two. Eva Lys also complimented Gauff on the look in the comments.
“This one is fire. You get it from your momma,” Candi commented.
“@candigauff thank you for the genes queen,” Coco Gauff responded.
“EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO SEE,” Lys posted.
Gauff later showed off a second Halloween look, cosplaying as the Winter Soldier from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The light mood is a change from her last week on court. In Beijing, Coco Gauff stopped play during a point against Sun Xinran after the electronic advertising boards beside the court flickered, and the umpire ordered the point replayed after a video review. The American won it and went on to take the match 7-5, 6-1, but the incident drew heavy online criticism, including racist abuse.
Gauff then lost to Elise Mertens in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 event and withdrew from the Wuhan Open just hours later.
Coco Gauff’s costume combines her love for Halloween and the beach

Halloween has been Coco Gauff’s favorite holiday since she was a child, as she revealed in a press conference during the 2023 WTA Finals. The two-time Grand Slam champion has turned Halloween into a family production in the past, going as Freddy Krueger and as Aisha from the Winx Club cartoon in 2023 and as Deadpool in 2024.
“I’ve always been passionate about Halloween since I was a kid. I always loved to dress up. I would do it, like, year-round. I’ve always talked about wanting to go to Cosplay, the conventions and all of that,” Gauff said.
Gauff also highlighted her love for the beach as she expressed delight at competing in Cancun, making her pirate costume all the more fitting.
“It reminds me of home. I live close to Miami so I’m really familiar, everything seems familiar here. The weather’s pretty much similar and obviously the beach. I love the beach. I’m like a mermaid so to wake up everyday and see the beach is a dream,” she added.
Coco Gauff will be in action at the WTA Finals next. The tournament will run from November 8 to 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with the draw reveal set for November 3. Gauff, who is aiming to win her second WTA Finals title, will be joined by Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova, Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, and Karolina Muchova at the year-end championships.
