Your brand is growing. Is your packaging keeping up?

A second flavour, a larger production run or an overseas customer can turn an occasional purchasing task into a constraint on growth.

The answer is not simply to buy more. Growing consumer brands need a packaging plan that connects demand, production and cash, while leaving room for products that have not yet proved themselves.

More products mean more stock decisions

Each new stock keeping unit adds another forecast, artwork file and reorder decision. A slow-selling variant can leave printed packs sitting in storage while the bestseller runs short. Total packaging stock may look healthy even when the business cannot fulfil its most valuable orders.

Review demand by product rather than treating the range as one number. Record usable stock, replenishment lead times and minimum order quantities for each format. Where products genuinely share technical requirements, discuss whether a common pack size or structure could simplify purchasing without compromising performance or confusing customers.

Match the production route to the stage of growth

A launch and an established range do not necessarily need the same purchasing model. Stock packaging may suit initial trials, while custom printing can support a clearer identity as demand develops. Higher volumes create another decision about specifications, production methods and commitments.

Apollo Pac illustrates this progression through its published stock, digitally printed and bespoke packaging options. Its website also describes technical support covering material specifications, barrier requirements and supply chain optimisation. These capabilities provide a basis for discussing a brand’s next stage; quantities, suitability and delivery commitments still need to be agreed for the particular order.

The important question is when to change approach. Agree what evidence would justify a larger commitment: repeat sales, a confirmed listing or a reliable production schedule. Moving too early can create surplus stock; waiting until packs run out can restrict an otherwise successful launch.

Protect cash without purchasing blind

A lower unit price can conceal a bigger commitment. Compare the total cash required, storage costs and exposure to obsolete artwork, alongside freight and any production setup charges. A cheap pouch is expensive if it belongs to a discontinued product.

Discuss a replenishment plan before agreeing volume. Establish who holds stock, when ownership and payment transfer, what releases are possible and how forecasts will be updated. Managed supply should mean an agreed operating arrangement, not an assumption that the supplier will absorb every change in demand.

Make changes visible before they reach production

Growth also multiplies opportunities for the wrong artwork or specification to reach the filling line. Keep an approved version for each product and market, with a named person responsible for authorising changes. Check samples against the product and equipment rather than approving appearance alone.

A new market may require different labelling or documentation, so establish requirements before ordering printed stock. Material substitutions deserve the same discipline: a similar-looking pack is not automatically equivalent in barrier performance, sealing behaviour or suitability for the intended contents.

Give packaging a place in the growth meeting

Packaging deserves a short, regular review alongside sales and production. Look at stockouts, slow-moving packs, quality issues and upcoming launches. Share revised forecasts with suppliers early enough for a useful response.

Assign ownership of those numbers to someone who can act on them. When responsibility sits between marketing, operations and finance, a brief shared review can prevent a purchasing decision from becoming an avoidable production delay.

The practical test is straightforward: could the current arrangement support the next meaningful order without an emergency purchase or an uncomfortable cash commitment? If the answer is unclear, reviewing packaging now is part of preparing the business to grow.
