A 36-year-old up-and-coming superstar competed in a title match on this week’s WWE SmackDown. Despite delivering a remarkable performance, he failed to capture championship gold.
Ricky Saints is the name in question. He has been feuding with Rey Fenix over the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship for months. In September, Fenix defeated Saints in a title match. Earlier this month, The Absolute lost to Fenix again, this time via disqualification. Tonight, the duo seemingly aimed to settle their differences once and for all in another championship contest.
Thanks for the submission!
Rey Fenix and Ricky Saints seemed evenly matched at the start of the title bout. The AAA World Cruiserweight Champion used his speed and athleticism to gain the upper hand in the match. Saints punished Fenix near the commentary table before attempting to remove his mask. However, the luchador bounced back with a massive Avalanche Jackhammer.
Both stars came close to pinning each other on many occasions. At one point in the match, The Absolute hit the Revolution DDT and seemed set to win, but Fenix shockingly kicked out. Saints also hit his opponent with the Death Valley Driver but it wasn’t enough to put him away on WWE SmackDown.
Fenix responded with a Rolling Cutter and set Saints up for the Mexican Muscle Buster. However, the former NXT Champion blocked the finishing maneuver. Saints tried to hit Fenix with another Revolution DDT, but his plan didn’t bear fruit. In the end, the masked superstar delivered his finisher to The Absolute and secured a pinfall victory.
Before losing to Fenix thrice in title matches, Saints unsuccessfully challenged Trick Williams for the United States Championship at Night of Champions. Tonight, The Absolute lost his fourth consecutive title bout on the Triple H-led main roster. As of now, it’s unclear what the future holds for Saints on WWE SmackDown.
