Gunther started 2026 as one of the most dangerous WWE stars on the roster. The Ring General was fresh off defeating John Cena via submission in the latter’s retirement match. He then retired AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble PLE and finished as the runner-up in the 30-man battle royal.
However, WWE has failed to capitalize on the Austrian star’s momentum. Gunther defeated Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42 before moving to SmackDown and entering the Undisputed WWE Title picture. Despite several attempts, The Ring General failed to capture the championship and has lost much of his momentum lately.

That said, the company can still save The Career Ki**er’s current run. Here are three ways WWE can revive Gunther and turn him into a monster heel once again.
#4. Keep Gunther away from Danhausen
Gunther has been at odds with Danhausen lately. The face-painted star has had several confrontations with The Ring General, and every one of them has irked the Austrian star. They were slated to face off in a singles match on the October 9 episode of SmackDown, but before the referee could ring the bell, Danhausen stopped him and tried to curse Gunther.
However, before he could complete the ritual, The Ring General attacked him. Finn Balor then made the save for Danhausen, but the Austrian star took him out as well. That said, involving Danhausen in the rivalry between Gunther and Finn Balor might not be the best idea.
The face-painted star is an entertaining act, but involving him with Gunther risks reducing the latter’s credibility as a dangerous competitor. Therefore, to make The Ring General a monster heel again, WWE must keep Gunther away from Danhausen.
#3. Destroy Finn Balor
Gunther’s issues with Finn Balor started when they both found themselves in contention for the Undisputed WWE Championship before SummerSlam. The Ring General has repeatedly mocked Balor for his one-day reign as Universal Champion ten years ago.
The Austrian star has already taken Balor out. The Irish star tried to save Danhausen from Gunther’s wrath, but paid for it dearly. The Ring General powerbombed Balor through the announcer’s table.
The Prince is an established name, and if The Ring General dominates the Irish star again, it would help him regain credibility as a monster heel.
#2. Gunther should defeat “The Demon” Finn Balor clean
Whenever the odds are stacked against him, Finn Balor taps into his darker side and brings out his Demon persona. The character last made an appearance at WrestleMania 42, defeating Dominik Mysterio in a Street Fight.
Balor has been absent since being taken out by Gunther on the October 9 episode of SmackDown. Since the Irish star has been backed into a corner, he could become The Demon to counter The Ring General.
If the creative team has Gunther defeat Finn Balor’s alter ego cleanly in a match, it would immediately reestablish The Ring General’s dominance. The Demon has rarely lost fair and square, making the Austrian star’s potential win meaningful.
#1. Put him back in the Undisputed WWE Title picture
Gunther has been chasing the Undisputed WWE Championship for months, but all of his efforts have been in vain. Once his issues with Finn Balor and Danhausen are behind him, The Ring General should once again enter the title picture.
Whoever is the champion by that point would get an established challenger in Gunther, and The Ring General would be back in the main event scene.
