After three amazing game drops, Minecraft is closing out 2026 with an underground themed update. The Minecraft 2026 Winter drop, releasing as Java Edition 26.4 and Bedrock Edition 26.70, introduces us to a frozen cave biome with falling spikes, cracking floors and a new zombie that throws ice at you.
Over the past couple months, Mojang pushed out all new features and changes for the upcoming Winter drop in snapshots, preview, and beta releases. While the release date is still unknown, we already know about almost everything coming in 2026’s final Minecraft update.
In this article, we will be going over the five best features Minecraft is bringing in the Winter 2026 game drop that deserve your attention and excitement.
Best features in upcoming Minecraft 26.4 and 26.70 update
1) Ice caves
After adding sulfur caves earlier this year, Minecraft is now adding another new cave biome for snowy biomes. Ice caves generate beneath frozen, cold and semi-cold surface biomes, and their walls are packed ice instead of stone. Calcite blobs sit inside those walls, snow patches and glowing ice crystals cover the floor, and icicles hang from the ceiling in chains that can grow up to 5 blocks long.
Ores still generate down here, embedded in pockets of stone and deepslate, so the trip pays off even if you ignore the scenery. Moreover, because of how ores look completely different from ice and calcite, these caves might become one of the best places for mining.
But before you head into ice caves carefreely, you need to know about its hidden danger: the footing is the problem. In ice caves, brittle ice forms the crevasses and starts cracking the moment you step on it, while any icicle segment hit by light level 5 or above melts and drops. Fortunately, there’s water to catch your fall if you end up falling. Lastly, frostbites and strays spawn in the biome too.
Tip: Carry a stack of blocks for bridging crevasses. Frostbites and strays can stand on brittle ice without breaking it, but you cannot.
2) Calcite block sets
Calcite used to mean one thing: the pale shell around an amethyst geode, or a streak through stony peaks. Ice caves add a new and abundant source of calcite, because the biome generates with calcite blobs throughout its walls. Calcite cannot be crafted, so a mining run underground in an ice cave doubles as a calcite run.
It now also has a full building set: a pillar, slabs, stairs and a wall, plus Polished Calcite from four calcite in a 2×2 grid and Polished Calcite Bricks from four polished calcite. Most shapes can be cut at a stonecutter, which matters when you need 200 stairs for a lodge roof. All three calcite types also belong to the Slow Bouncy archetype, so sulfur cubes treat them differently from ordinary stone.
3) Ice and snow bricks
The Minecraft 2026 Winter game drop is truly an amazing update for builders, as it adds so many new block palettes. Packed Ice Bricks come from four packed ice in a 2×2 grid, with slabs, stairs, walls and a chiseled variant on the side. What they do not do is slide you around: unlike the packed ice they are made from, the bricks are not slippery. A frozen floor that players can actually walk on is useful in any ice build. You will need a pickaxe to collect them, but unlike regular ice, Silk Touch is not required.
Snow Bricks use the same recipe with four snow blocks, and they add slabs, stairs and walls. Those variants cannot be made at a stonecutter, so every one comes from a crafting table, and mining them takes a shovel rather than a pickaxe.
4) Jukebox playlist
The Minecraft Winter game drop also brings some love to jukeboxes by giving them a playlist feature and adding a new music disc. Place a chest, trapped chest or copper chest variant directly above a jukebox and the jukebox treats the discs inside as a playlist. It plays them in slot order, skips empty slots and any non-disc item, then loops back to the start. When a track finishes, the jukebox swaps in the next disc automatically, and ejecting the current one skips ahead to the next disc available.
As for the new Minecraft music disc, it is called “Flurry” by Hyper Potions and can be found in igloo basement chests, with a comparator output of 7 when played. Igloos have a 30% chance of having this music disc inside a chest, so expect a few igloo runs before you own it in Minecraft.
5) Ice Ball and new potion of Freezing
In Minecraft 2026 Winter drop, Frostbites drop Ice Balls when killed, and they are not only mob ammunition. Thrown by a player, an Ice Ball deals up to 4 damage with knockback that scales down as the projectile slows, and it decelerates sharply like a snowball. The better use is brewing: an Ice Ball plus an Awkward Potion makes a Potion of Freezing.
The effect is basically bottled powder snow. It slows the target and deals damage over time, leather armor stops the damage without removing the effect, and being on fire cancels it. Fiery mobs like blazes, magma cubes and striders take five times the damage, so a Splash Potion of Freezing is a strong opener against a blaze spawner. Eight arrows and a Lingering Potion of Freezing also make Arrows of Freezing if you would rather keep your distance.
