One person has been taken to hospital after a fire broke out at the military barracks accommodation block in Catterick Garrison.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said multiple crews were sent at 19:48 BST on Thursday where the blaze was found to be “well alight”.

The service said the person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation while fire crews remained on scene until 02:43 BST.

It said on-site personnel kept a watching brief overnight and a fire investigation was due to take place.

Along with firefighters from North Yorkshire, additional resources were sent from several other stations.

Unverified videos and images shared online show flames and smoke rising up from a building as bystanders watch.

The BBC has asked the Ministry of Defence for comment.

Hipswell and Colburn councillor Kevin Foster had earlier told local media: “My immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including our military personnel, their families and the emergency services responding to the incident.”
