Sporting CP and Maritimo get their 2026-27 Taça da Liga campaign underway when they square off in the quarter-finals at the Estádio José Alvalade on Tuesday. Having suffered their first league defeat of the campaign at the weekend, Rui Borges’ side will be aiming to restore some pride here, while the visitors will be desperate to snap a run of five consecutive defeats in the cup competition.
Sporting Lisbon were left disappointed in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Sunday when they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Académico de Viseu, with Brazilian midfielder João Guilherme netting a brace to fire Académico to a huge victory.
Thanks for the submission!
This came just four days after Borges’ men suffered their first defeat of the 2026-27 campaign in the UEFA Champions League on October 21, when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Austrian outfit LASK to end their run of 10 consecutive games without defeat across all competitions.
Sporting, who are already nine points adrift of league leaders Porto in the Primeira Liga standings, now turn their sights to the Taça da Liga, where they will be aiming to shake off last season’s disappointments, having reached the semi-finals before losing 2-1 against Vitória de Guimarães.
On the other hand, Maritimo were sent crashing back down to earth at the weekend when they suffered a 5-0 hammering against Vitória de Guimarães, a result which extended their winless run in the Primeira Liga to seven matches (2D 5L).
Before that, Mitchell van der Gaag’s men kicked off their 2026-27 Taça de Portugal journey with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Campeonato de Portugal side Alcochetense on October 18 to end their run of six straight games without a win.
Maritimo, who sit 14th in the Primeira Liga table, will now look to find their feet in the Taça da Liga, where they have lost their last five matches and are without a win in eight (2D 6L) since a 2-1 victory over Leixões in the qualifying playoffs back in August 2019.

Sporting CP vs Maritimo Prediction
Fresh off losing back-to-back games for the first time since December 2024, Sporting CP will look to restore some pride here, and we expect them to go all out against an out-of-sorts Maritimo side.
Maritimo’s away hoodoo in this fixture gives Sporting plenty of optimism heading into this one, and we predict they will come away with a comfortable victory in front of their home supporters.
Prediction: Sporting CP 3-1 Maritimo
