“My dead mom can coach them better”: Stephen A. Smith, Michael Irvin tear into Brian Schottenheimer after Cowboys’ 33-30 loss vs. Cardinals

This post was originally published on this site.

The Cowboys led 24-10 with 14:20 left at AT&T Stadium on Sunday and lost 33-30 in overtime to Arizona. By Monday morning, Hall of Famer Michael Irvin had stopped searching for silver linings.

“There is no worse that you can be,” Irvin said on ESPN’s “First Take.” “There’s no worse that you can be than they are right now. … They are the worst. So anybody, anybody, my dead mom can coach them better.”

Thanks for the submission!

Stephen A. Smith went after Schottenheimer’s self-assessment in October, when at 2-4, the Cowboys HC said, “I’ve got strong shoulders. I know what a great coach I am.”

“You are a coordinator that wasn’t even calling plays, and you got the head coaching job when nobody else was looking to hire you as a head coach. And Jerry Jones put you in that position and you under .500 and calling yourself a great coach,” Smith said.

Smith’s remedy was ESPN itself. He said Jones should call the network and “pluck Rex Ryan from this job,” and argued Ryan should replace defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

Ryan has not coached in the NFL since 2016 with the Buffalo Bills.

Most of the damage came on the ground. Tyler Allgeier ran for 147 yards on 11 carries, including a 63-yard touchdown, after Gardner Minshew replaced Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter.

Minshew went 17 of 23 for 188 yards and three touchdowns, the last capping an 80-yard drive that ended with Michael Wilson’s 13-yard score with six seconds left. Chad Ryland missed the extra point that would have won it, then kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime.

Jerry Jones makes stance clear on Brian Schottenheimer

Jones, speaking after the game, ruled out the change Smith wants.

“We’re not going to get into anything. That’s not in my mind at this time,” he said, before recalling 2010, when he fired Wade Phillips midseason: “I made a change with Wade Phillips there in the middle of the season, and I don’t see that here at all.”

He spread the blame. “I will say that a lot of people let Brian down today,” Jones said. “So for whatever criticism we want to have with Brian, we can all get in line.”

Schottenheimer is 10-14-1 as Dallas coach and has won consecutive games once.
