Crystal Palace have lost their appeal against Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card in the defeat by Tottenham on Saturday.

The striker was shown a straight red by referee Michael Oliver for a late challenge on Micky van de Ven when the game was still 0-0, after just 13 minutes.

Oliver originally gave a yellow card but it was upgraded after a video assistant referee review.

The France forward will now miss three matches – Sunday’s fixture at Liverpool, the trip to Coventry on 21 November and a home game against Hull on 29 November.

The Liverpool match could have a bearing on manager Pierre Sage’s long-term future at Palace after a disappointing start to his reign.

The Eagles are 18th in the Premier League with seven points from nine matches, and have lost their past three games in the competition, conceding nine goals and scoring none.

Mateta caught Spurs defender Van de Ven on top of the ankle but in Palace’s view the impact was accidental.

It is understood the 29-year-old forward believed his eyes were on the ball and that he did not see the Dutch centre-back.

Mateta will remain available for Palace’s Thursday’s Europa League match at home to Hoffenheim and for the visit of Real Sociedad on 26 November.
