Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley left Wednesday’s Battle of Alberta clash with a lower-body injury after colliding with Oilers forward Colton Dach.
With just 11 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Dach drove hard to the net with the puck and crashed into Cooley. The Oilers forward was assessed a two-minute minor for goaltender interference.
Devin Cooley finished the period but did not return for the second, with Dustin Wolf taking over in net. The Flames later confirmed Cooley would not return due to the lower-body injury, sparking debate among fans on social media.
Sharing his thoughts on the collision with Devin Cooley, Dach said post-game:
I’m just trying to take ice, you know, to the net and create a chance. But you know, really unfortunate that he got hurt on it.
One tweeted:
“He got pushed in. Flames fans will cry for blood however, their team is too soft.”
Another chimed in:
“I thought it was a dirty play and I wish the Flames would have went after Dach.”
Here are some of the other top reactions on X:
“I’m an Oiler fan and I don’t understand why the Flames weren’t hunting down 34 the whole game. That was a dirty play,” a third fan wrote.
“These players run the net recklessly and then just blame the D for trying to stop them. The league needs to protect goalies. Unacceptable,” one opined.
“Dach ran 2 goalies, took one out, and no response from the @NHLFlames. In the 80s, a bench-clearing brawl would have broken out,” another chimed in.
“Oilers are awful. That’s awful. That’s disgusting,” added another.
