Bowen Byram has the medical clearance. He does not have the comfort level yet. Sportsnet’s Frank Seravalli said over the weekend that Blackhawks doctors have cleared Byram to play through his upper-body injury, but the defenseman has not felt ready to get back in. “At this point, it’s really just a comfort issue,” Seravalli said, in comments shared by BlackhawksFocus on X. “He’s gotten the clearances that he needs to play.”
Seravalli was equally clear that the delay is not a setback. Chicago had hoped Byram would work his way into a game on the team’s Dad’s Trip, which ended in Boston without him. “To be clear, not a setback, just hasn’t found that level quite yet,” he said, adding that the return is “not too far away.”
Byram last played on Oct. 13, a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Saturday’s game against the Bruins was the seventh straight he has missed. The next checkpoint is Monday, when Chicago hosts the Colorado Avalanche at 7 p.m. CT.
Fans on X moved quickly from the injury report to the trade. One fan wrote:
“Does Bowen Byram even want to be a Chicago Blackhawk? Dude got paid, played like a**, and dipped out 10 games in.”
Others mocked the wording of the update.
“‘Comfort issue.’ Sounds like we paid the right guy. A real gamer. 😭”
One reply went back to the pick that went the other way.
“Man I really wish we used that 4th overall pick. Team is still nowhere close to a contender. Getting Byram for that amount is such a rush move that is going nowhere. This guy is gonna be Seth Jones 2.0”
Another questioned the player rather than the contract.
“His attitude has always been complete sh*t. Why did we expect any different?”
When is Bowen Byram coming back?
The Blackhawks have listed Bowen Byram as day-to-day. He has been skating in a non-contact jersey, but there is still no confirmed return date. Coach Jeff Blashill clarified that the defenseman’s injury is not related to concussion protocol, according to Mark Lazerus of The Athletic. The team has otherwise described it only as an upper-body injury.
Byram had one assist, five shots on goal and a minus-7 rating in six games before his injury. Chicago also gave up a significant package to acquire him from Buffalo, sending Louis Crevier and its No. 4 and No. 45 picks in the 2026 draft in exchange for Byram and Jordan Greenway.
The Blackhawks then signed Byram to a six-year, $75 million extension in July. The deal begins in 2027-28, meaning he is playing this season on a $6.25 million cap hit.
