HGV width: why knowing your vehicle’s dimensions matters

This post was originally published on this site.

Keeping accurate vehicle dimensions readily available helps operators plan work and gives drivers information they can rely on.

Start with the legal limit

For a breakdown of the rules by vehicle type, TRALERT®, a well-known European manufacturer and supplier of LED vehicle lighting for HGVs and trailers, explains the maximum HGV width in the UK.

Operators should check the vehicle’s recorded dimensions and the rules that apply to its category. Loads and fitted equipment may affect the overall width, while certain items are treated differently when width is measured for legal purposes. Requirements can also differ across borders, so international operators should check the rules for every country on the route.

Plan for the vehicle on the road

The legal measurement does not always reflect the space a vehicle occupies in practice. Mirrors, for example, may be excluded from the legal width measurement, but they still extend beyond the body and need clearance. A load or equipment fitted to the vehicle can also affect how much room is needed.

This matters on narrow roads, through roadworks and at customer sites with restricted access. A route that looks suitable on a map may include tight turns, parked vehicles or limited space to manoeuvre. Drivers should use route-planning tools designed for commercial vehicles and check restrictions before setting off. If access is uncertain, confirm it with the site in advance.

Keep vehicle and load details current

Width information is useful only when it reflects the vehicle as it is operated. A body change, new equipment or a different trailer can alter the dimensions recorded in fleet systems. Update those records whenever a vehicle is modified or assigned to a different type of work.

Loading needs the same attention. Check the dimensions and position of the load, as well as how it is secured. If the vehicle or load may exceed the standard limit, confirm the applicable rules and any required arrangements before the journey begins.

Make the vehicle easier to see

Other road users need to judge an HGV’s position and outline, particularly in poor weather or low light. Keep lamps, reflectors and marker lights clean and in working order, and replace damaged units promptly. Good visibility does not change the vehicle’s permitted width, but it can help others see where the vehicle is on the road.

Include the lighting in routine walk-round checks. The same check can help identify damaged or loose fittings that may affect the vehicle or load before departure.

A practical check before departure

Before the vehicle leaves the depot, confirm that its recorded dimensions match its current configuration. Check the route for restrictions, make sure the load is within the permitted dimensions and test the lights. Drivers should know where to find the vehicle’s height, width and length information rather than relying on memory.

A short check before departure can prevent a difficult situation later in the journey. The space needed to operate safely changes with the road, the load and surrounding traffic, so both the legal dimensions and the vehicle’s practical clearance matter.
