The British & Irish Lion left Irish rugby at the end of the season after nine seasons with Leinster
Ireland international James Lowe’s next move has been confirmed, with the wing officially signing for Japanese side Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath after leaving Leinster.
Lowe left the Irish province at the end of the season after weeks of speculation, with his departure sparking anger in Ireland. It was later revealed that he had a deal to stay in Ireland with the URC winners until next year’s World Cup withdrawn at the last minute, before being offered half the money, leading the upset star to decide to leave.
He was immediately linked with a move to Japan to replace Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe in Tokyo, and the switch has now officially been confirmed.

The 34-year-old’s move is set to bring his Test career to an end, with the Irish Rugby Football Union expected to stick by its policy of only selecting players who play for one of the four provinces for the national team.
However, head coach Andy Farrell has refused to shut the door completely on the idea of the wing adding to his tally of 45 international caps, despite his “disappointing” exit from Irish rugby.
For now, however, Lowe is fully focused on making the most of his time in Japan, having shared his delight at making the switch in a statement released by his new club on Monday.
“To everyone in the Suntory Sungoliath family, my family and I are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Japan,” he said.
“I have some very special memories from playing there. I have always admired the passion for rugby, the respect shown both on and off the field, and the pride people take in representing their team and I am looking forward to learning more about Japan and its culture.
“It is a huge honour to join such prestigious club,” Lowe added. “I will do everything I can to earn the trust of my teammates, coaches and supporters.
“I want to bring energy, physicality and a positive attacking mindset to the team. I can’t wait to get stuck in and I can’t wait to meet you all! Yatte Minahare.”
New Zealand-born Lowe scored 17 tries in his 45 appearances for Ireland, winning two Six Nations titles with Farrell’s side and touring Australia with the British & Irish Lions last year.
He also became Leinster’s top try-scorer in his nine seasons at the province, crossing the whitewash 71 times in 101 appearances.
