English giants Manchester United welcome Italian side AS Roma to Old Trafford on Tuesday for the fourth league-phase match of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League. Man United have the upper hand in the head-to-head record between the sides, although Roma won the last time they met.

Manchester United are struggling badly in the English Premier League, sitting 17th in the standings with only seven points from nine games.

Thanks for the submission!

In fact, they are one place above the relegation zone by virtue of their superior goal difference to Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils are in poor form, having gone winless in their last nine games across all competitions, their longest such streak since 1988.

Pressure on coach Michael Carrick increased with their most recent result, a 2-0 EPL defeat away to rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored for the Blues to add more misery to a dejected Man United.

In UEFA Champions League action, the Red Devils started well with a 4-0 home win over Sabah, but they followed that victory up with losses to Spanish club Atletico Madrid (2-0) and Italian side Como (4-1).

Those results have left United in 20th place on three points, tied with 11 other European sides in the league-phase standings.

Meanwhile, AS Roma are flying in Serie A, with the third-placed capital club on 24 points from 10 games and still unbeaten in the top flight.

League leaders and city rivals Lazio are four points above the Giallorossi, with 28 points, but Roma will now refocus on Europe’s elite club competition.

Roma kicked off their Champions League journey with a 1-1 away draw against Turkish side Fenerbahce, before a disappointing night in Rome, where the home side should have secured three points against mighty Real Madrid. Instead, they let Jose Mourinho’s side complete an incredible comeback from 3-1 down in the dying minutes of the game to win 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side bounced back from that disappointment with an impressive 4-0 demolition of Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava in Rome on 20 October.

Mario Hermoso, Nahuel Molina, Niccolò Pisilli, and Donyell Malen all got their names on the scoresheet to ensure a comfortable victory and three valuable points for Roma, allowing the Giallorossi to sit 15th in the league-phase standings with four points from three games, tied with Atletico Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, and PSV Eindhoven.

If the league phase were to end today, both Roma and Man United would qualify for the playoff round as two of the teams between the ninth and 24th positions, but with five matches still to go, much can change, and a solid run of results could even see one or both teams reach the top eight places which qualify automatically for the round of 16.

Manchester United vs AS Roma head-to-head stats and key numbers

  • Manchester United and Roma have clashed on eight occasions, with United winning five times and the Italians emerging victorious twice. The other fixture ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • Former Man United strikers Edinson Cavani and Wayne Rooney are the top scorers in this fixture historically, with four goals each.
  • After this week’s match against Roma, Man United will face Sporting Lisbon, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and Villarreal in their remaining league-phase matches.
  • Following Roma’s match against Manchester United, the Giallorossi will take on European champions PSG, Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, AEK Athens, and French side Lille in the league phase.

Manchester United vs AS Roma prediction

Gasperini has Roma playing a high-intensity, fluid style of football that requires the wing-backs to push up aggressively, while direct transitions make them dangerous moving up the pitch.

Manchester United are likely to rely on their home advantage to unsettle the visitors and dictate the tempo, while the English club focuses on improving defensively. They will likely build up patiently through midfield, relying on the creativity and passing accuracy of midfield maestro Bruno Fernandes to pick out runners and create goal-scoring chances.

Considering Man United’s horrible recent form and Roma’s confidence at the moment, we are predicting an away victory for the Italians.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 AS Roma
