Marcus Mathers was one of the most talented young prospects in WWE as part of their ID program. However, the 23-year-old star has now joined Ring of Honor after departing the Entertainment Juggernaut last month. He made his debut on this week’s ROH and is now an official member of the Tony Khan-owned promotion’s roster.
Mathers joined WWE as part of their ID program few years ago and became a standout due to his incredible in-ring work. He even had some matches on EVOLVE and NXT. He left the promotion last month and many fans were expecting him to go back to the indies or sign with All Elite Wrestling. Within just a month of his WWE departure, Mathers has now signed with Ring of Honor.
He made his debut on this week’s show by appearing in a backstage interview. He had his first match inside an ROH ring against the Don Callis Family’s Mark Davis. While Mathers failed to pick up the victory in the match, he addressed his ROH debut in his recent tweet.
“Ring Of Honor has seen some of the best wrestlers in the world, but now meet the Worlds Finest. 🔔,” he wrote.
It will be interesting to see what Tony Khan has planned for him in Ring of Honor.
Former WWE ID prospect Marcus Mathers talked about the importance of his ROH debut
At just 23 years old, Marcus has had over 900 matches in his career. The former WWE ID prospect talked about his journey during his backstage interview at Ring of Honor. He talked about watching ROH growing up and how much the debut means to him.
“This moment means everything to me. Let me tell you, ever since I was a kid, 6-7-8 my dad would take me to the Philadelphia armory, watching Ring of Honor, watching the world’s best wrestlers and I didn’t realise at the time but I was studying. I was preparing for this moment and I said Philadelphia. For the past 8 years, like you said, around the world, throughout those 900 matches at 23 years old. I’ve been bringing that Philly grit, that Philly attitude everywhere I go and now it’s time I bring it to Ring of Honor. Ring of Honor has the world’s best but now you’re gonna get the world’s finest,” he said.
A lot of top names in the wrestling world today like Seth Rollins, CM Punk and Kevin Owens started in Ring of Honor. Fans are excited to see Marcus Mathers wrestle there.
