While NFL wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues his search for a new team after his fallout with the San Francisco 49ers, his departure from San Francisco is reportedly facing a roadblock.
The wide receiver owes the team roughly $13 million in bonus forfeitures, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association are reportedly trying to resolve the situation.
Thanks for the submission!
“Veteran WR Brandon Aiyuk owes the 49ers roughly $13 million in bonus forfeiture, a potential complication in his efforts to secure his release by reporting to the facility Friday,” Pelissero wrote on X.

“The NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association are both involved in attempting to resolve the situation. The sides could reach an agreement to pay back the money, or it could go to arbitration. But it’s complicated and may take time to resolve.”

Aiyuk filed for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list and planned to report to the team’s Santa Clara facility on Friday. His new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter the two would “put our best foot forward.” However, the NFL had not processed the reinstatement, per Pro Football Talk.
Brandon Aiyuk’s NFL future remains uncertain
Any team acquiring Brandon Aiyuk at the trade deadline would inherit a contract fight along with a receiver who has not taken a snap in more than two years. A release remains the expected ending.
However, a return to the 49ers roster has not been ruled out by San Francisco general manager John Lynch. Neither the 49ers nor the league has commented on the $13 million figure. A release, a trade or an unlikely return all require the same first step: agreeing on the money.
