After back-to-back home games in the Premier League, Chelsea leave the capital behind on Sunday, heading north to the Stadium of Light to face a struggling Sunderland side. With the second international break of the campaign set to follow, the weekend clash will be viewed as a must-win for the hosts, as victory could lift them off the foot of the table, while the visitors will look to consolidate their place in the top four.
Sunderland enjoyed a campaign to remember last season, securing continental football in their first Premier League campaign in nearly a decade. However, the previously promising project under head coach Regis Le Bris has begun to unravel at an alarming rate, with the Frenchman now under immense pressure to deliver a result.
Thanks for the submission!
The Black Cats were brushed aside when they visited newly promoted Coventry City last time out in the league, finding themselves three goals down before the hour mark. Enzo Le Fee subsequently pulled one back from the spot, but Sunderland still left the CBS Arena with a 3-1 defeat.
A response was needed, and frankly expected, when Le Bris’ men hosted Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League on Thursday night. Instead, Sunderland found themselves 2-0 down by halftime, and although the head coach introduced four of his regulars at the break, there was no way back for the hosts.
Despite showing plenty of positive signs, Chelsea remain a work in progress under head coach Xabi Alonso, with greater consistency needed if they are to make a genuine push for the league title.
Following defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the league and cup respectively, Chelsea welcomed a struggling Manchester United side to Stamford Bridge last time out. The Blues appeared set for an extended slump after struggling to gain control of the first half and were perhaps fortunate to reach the interval with the scores still level.
However, Alonso’s halftime talk had the desired effect, as the capital club came out swinging and dominated the entire second period to claim a 2-0 victory.
Sunderland vs Chelsea Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Sunderland enjoyed success in this fixture last season, completing the league double over Chelsea for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign.
- The Blues have registered just one win in their last five visits to the Stadium of Light.
- Only Nottingham Forest (six) have scored fewer goals than the hosts (seven) in the Premier League this season.
- Chelsea have kept just two clean sheets away from home across all competitions in 2026.
Sunderland vs Chelsea Prediction
While Chelsea’s recent results on the road have been far from ideal, with three defeats in their last four away matches, they remain overwhelming favorites for this one. They will look to replicate their second-half display against United to overpower considerably weaker opposition.
Sunderland, meanwhile, have little more than home advantage in their favor on Sunday, which could prove insufficient to prevent another defeat.
Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Chelsea
