The most controversial World No. 1 in history: Why Alexander Zverev’s rise is a story tennis can neither ignore nor celebrate

Alexander Zverev unlocked yet another achievement to cement his status as the very best in the business. Following his win over Tallon Griekspoor at the Vienna Open earlier this week, he will be crowned as the World No. 1 once the ATP rankings are updated on Monday, November 2. An already divisive figure in tennis, his latest accomplishment puts the sport at crossroads with regards to his legacy due to his off-court issues and his lucky break to clinch the top ranking.

Zverev was a highly-touted prospect as a junior. He rose to the top of the junior rankings and capped off his junior career with the boys’ singles title at the Australian Open 2014. His transition to the senior circuit went pretty smoothly and he became one of the youngest players to win a Challenger title while being 17 years and two months old.

Thanks for the submission!

The 2016 season marked Zverev’s arrival on the big stage. He upset Roger Federer at one of his favorite tournaments, the Halle Open. He broke the Swiss legend’s streak of 10 consecutive finals while competing at the tournament by beating him in the semifinals. A few months later, he beat reigning US Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the St. Petersburg Open final to claim his maiden ATP title.

Zverev established himself as the new kid on the block thanks to his results in 2016. There was no sophomore slump for the German as he backed up his breakthrough season the next year as well. He beat Novak Djokovic to claim his maiden Masters 1000 title at the Italian Open 2017 and entered the top 10 as well.

Zverev continued to impress over the next few years. While he performed really well at other tour events, he struggled to put his best foot forward at the Majors. That finally changed at the US Open 2020, where he advanced to his maiden Major final. The title was well within his grasp but he lost to Dominic Thiem in five sets despite being two points away from victory.

What should’ve been a breakthrough moment for the tour’s poster boy soon turned into a nightmare. A month after his runner-up finish at the US Open, Zverev was accused of domestic violence by his former partner, Olga Sharypova. She alleged that he had been physically violent towards her on multiple occasions. These allegations were initially published in Racquet magazine in October 2020, and a second article was published a year later elaborating on the same.

Zverev vehemently denied all allegations against him. The ATP launched an independent investigation by a third-party into the matter and closed the case in January 2023. They stated the evidence against Zverev was simply insufficient to punish him.

Nevertheless, Zverev’s image took a hit. Since the matter didn’t go to trial in a court of law, he had his fair share of supporters as well as detractors. People were quite vocal about the sport associating itself with an alleged abuser. During this period he was also defaulted from the Mexican Open 2022. He struck the chair umpire’s chair following his defeat in doubles, which effectively brought an end to his singles campaign as well.

Zverev’s temper tantrum didn’t do much to quell the whispers of his alleged domestic violence case. He then suffered a career-threatening injury at the French Open 2022, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. He returned to the tour at the start of the 2023 season, just when the ATP gave him a clean chit with respect to the domestic violence allegations. However, that was just the calm before the storm.

Alexander Zverev’s personal issues have often clouded his on-court success

A few months after the ATP wrapped up its investigation into Alexander Zverev‘s domestic violence allegations, he was accused of the same by yet another former partner. Brenda Patea, Zverev’s ex-girlfriend with whom he also has a daughter, filed a court case against him in July 2023 for causing bodily harm.

Those who were on the fence after the first wave of allegations against Zverev, started to believe that he was indeed guilty. The ATP Tour appointed him to the Players Advisory Council while the second case against him was still ongoing. This was met with a fresh wave of criticism as fans sought accountability from Zverev as well as the ATP Tour.

Zverev and Patea’s case eventually went to trial. The trial concluded in June 2024, and neither Zverev’s guilt nor innocence was proved since the involved parties came to an agreement. The German and his legal team emphasized his innocence, adding that the agreement didn’t include any admission of guilt or wrongdoing on Zverev’s part.

Even a single instance of a domestic violence allegation is enough to dent a person’s credibility. So when someone is accused by two different people, giving them the benefit of doubt becomes quite difficult. On paper, Zverev is the perfect candidate for a sport to champion and celebrate.

Zverev toiled hard for a decade and bided his time. He was initially denied by the three legends of the sport, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal. Just when it looked like their reign was over for good, two prodigies, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, quickly established their duopoly, denying Zverev and others from his generation a shot at glory.

Zverev’s comeback from a devastating ankle injury, coupled with him being a Type 1 diabetic, makes him an inspiration. His perseverance was eventually rewarded this year. He captured his maiden Major title at the French Open, reigned supreme at the US Open a few months later, and has now attained the No. 1 ranking as well.

While a fair share of Zverev’s naysayers cite his personal life as the focal point of their disdain for him, those who strictly separate the off-court and on-court lives have a different perspective. The German’s rise to the top this year was facilitated by the absence of Alcaraz and Sinner for most of the season.

The two youngsters have a combined 11-0 record against Zverev since the start of the 2025 season. He lost to Sinner five times this year, including the Wimbledon final. The Italian initially delayed his return to the tour after his victory at SW19, and eventually shut down his season for good.

Alcaraz was also sidelined for four months this year. He overcame severe cramping to beat Zverev in the semifinals of the Australian Open, their only meeting this year. Zverev certainly capitalized on their absence to claim two Major titles. Alcaraz and Sinner had won nine consecutive Majors between them prior to Zverev’s French Open win this year.

Critics now belittle Zverev’s accomplishments, stating he lucked out due to Alcaraz and Sinner being out of his way. While a couple of notorious players attained the top ranking in the past, Marcelo Rios and Boris Becker to be precise, neither was accused of something so serious as domestic violence.

While Zverev never became a persona non grata due to his personal issues, it still made him a tough figure to root for. The circumstances behind his triumphs this year, although beyond his control, give the naysayers fresh ammunition regarding his place in the sport. Zverev’s success is now a paradox, something which can’t be widely celebrated but the circumstances surrounding it can’t be swept under the rug either.
