Toni Kukoc became a legend in Chicago as part of the 1996-1998 three-peat team. Former Bulls general manager Jerry Krause drafted him in the second round in 1990 and spent years raving about him, which irritated Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
The legendary Bulls duo held him to four points on 2-of-11 shooting as the “Dream Team” beat Croatia 103-70 at the 1992 Olympics. He joined Chicago in 1993 and went on to win Sixth Man of the Year in 1996 and three straight titles from 1996 to 1998. Over 13 NBA seasons, he averaged 11.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

Drazen Petrovic played only four seasons in the NBA, but he made them count. Portland drafted him in 1986, but he stayed in Europe until 1989. He was traded to the Nets in January 1991, and in 1991-92 he averaged 20.6 points and led New Jersey to its first playoff appearance since 1986. In 1992-93, the Croatian averaged 22.3 points on 51.8% shooting and scored a career-high 44 against Houston on January 24, 1993.
That season earned him an All-NBA Third Team selection, making him the first European to be named to an All-NBA team. On June 7, 1993, he died in a car accident at the age of 28. The Nets retired jersey No. 3 in honor of Petrovic in November 1993.

Arvydas Sabonis entered the NBA having played half of his career in Europe. He was originally selected by Portland with the 24th overall pick in 1986, but Soviet restrictions and Achilles injuries delayed his arrival until 1995.
He turned 31 that December. As an NBA rookie who averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds in 73 games, he made the All-Rookie First Team and finished runner-up for both Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man. Before that, he’d led the USSR to 1988 Olympic gold, beating the United States 82-76 in the semifinals, and added bronze medals for Lithuania in 1992 and 1996.

He finished third in MVP voting, made the All-NBA First Team, and was Western Conference Finals MVP after the Spurs beat OKC in May. The Knicks beat San Antonio in five games in the NBA Finals, bringing the French sensation’s season to an end. In Game 4, the Spurs blew a 29-point lead, the largest ever lost in a Finals game.

Pau Gasol entered the league in 2002 and immediately made a name for himself as the first non-American to win Rookie of the Year in 2002. The Hawks selected Gasol third and traded him to the Grizzlies on draft night. The Spaniard turned the Grizzlies into a respectable team, but he is remembered for his stint with the Lakers. He arrived in LA in February 2008 and reached three straight finals, winning back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010 as Kobe Bryant’s running mate.
He finished his career with six All-Star nominations, two All-NBA Second Team and two All-NBA Third Team selections. The Lakers retired his jersey No. 16 on March 7, 2023, hanging it next to Kobe’s two numbers.

Luka Doncic is one of the finest scorers to have set foot on the NBA hardwood. The Dallas Mavericks shocked the world when they traded him to the Lakers on February 2, 2025, for Anthony Davis after he had led the Mavs to a finals appearance a season before. In the 2025-26 season, he led the league in scoring at 33.5 points per game and won his second scoring title. He was named All-NBA First Team for the sixth time and finished fourth in MVP voting.
The Slovenian has yet to win a championship, but his individual accomplishments in eight seasons surpass those of many other foreign players who have come and gone in the league. He is currently in his ninth season and is an early favorite to win the MVP award.

The Bucks selected Giannis Antetokounmpo 15th in the 2013 draft as a kid from Athens, Greece. Antetokounmpo won back-to-back MVP awards in 2019 and 2020. He was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2020.
In 2021, he led the Bucks to an NBA championship and won the Finals MVP honor. He has 10 All-Star nominations and seven All-NBA First Team selections. In July, the Bucks traded him to Miami for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and draft capital.

In 2011, he led Dallas to a championship, getting past Miami’s big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The German won the Finals MVP in the same run. He finished his career with 31,560 points, ranking seventh on the all-time scoring list. He is still the highest-scoring foreign-born player in NBA history. The Mavs retired jersey No. 41 in his honor in January 2022.
