Glenn Maxwell Retires: 5 Indian stars you may not know were his teammates in IPL ft. Ajit Agarkar

This post was originally published on this site.

Glenn Maxwell on Monday, November 2, announced his retirement from internationals, List A, and first-class cricket. The 38-year-old confirmed the decision on The Final Word podcast. He will keep playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, where his contract now runs till the 2027-28 season.

His last match for Australia was the 2026 T20 World Cup group game against Oman in February, where he took two wickets and did not bat. A winner of three World Cup medals (2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, 2021 T20 World Cup), his defining innings came at the 2023 World Cup, when he made 201 not out off 128 balls against Afghanistan at the Wankhede.

The IPL tells the other half of the story: 2,819 runs and 41 wickets in 141 matches, a strike rate that kept him in demand at every auction, but a run of seasons that never quite matched his reputation.

Here are 5 Indian stars you may have forgotten shared the dressing room with Glenn Maxwell.

#1 Ajit Agarkar (Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2012)

Ajit Agarkar was 34 and near the end of his career when he and Maxwell were both at the Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2012. The former India chief selector played four matches and took three wickets at an economy of 9.35, his best being the 2 for 27 that helped bowl the Mumbai Indians out at the Wankhede on April 16. Maxwell, 23 and in his first IPL season, managed 6 runs in two games.

#2 Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians, IPL 2013)

Maxwell moved to the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2013, the season Sachin Tendulkar, at 40, made 287 runs in 14 matches at 22.07 with a highest score of 54. A left-hand injury picked up against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 13 kept him out of the final, which Mumbai won by 23 runs against the Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens for their first title. He retired from the IPL that night. Maxwell’s contribution was 36 runs in three matches.

#3 Cheteshwar Pujara (Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2014)

Cheteshwar Pujara arrived at the 2014 auction as a Test specialist and opened with Virender Sehwag, scoring 125 runs in six matches at an average of 25 and a strike rate of 100.8, with a highest of 40. The Kings XI Punjab released him after the season. Maxwell had a breakout season: 552 runs in 16 matches at 187.75, including 95 off 43 balls in the chase of 206 against Chennai in Abu Dhabi. KXIP reached their first final and lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders.

#4 Rinku Singh (Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2017)

This is a squad-list curiosity rather than a partnership. The Kings picked Rinku Singh at the 2017 auction but never gave him a game, before KKR signed him the following year, where his career flourished. Maxwell was Punjab’s main middle-order asset that year, making 310 runs in 13 innings, comfortably his best return since 2014.

#5 Gautam Gambhir (Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2018)

The Daredevils bought Maxwell back for IPL 2018 and paired him with Gautam Gambhir, who had returned to the franchise as captain. The season was underwhelming for both. The current India head coach handed over the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer midway through the season. DD finished bottom, while Gambhir retired from all cricket that December. Glenn Maxwell made 169 runs in 12 innings, the last of his Delhi appearances.
