Gurnoor Brar banters with Blair Tickner and dismisses him next ball in NZ vs IND 2026 1st ODI [Watch]

Indian fast bowler Gurnoor Brar produced a lighthearted moment and lethal execution on Wednesday, outwitting New Zealand tailender Blair Tickner immediately after a cheeky mid-pitch exchange during the first ODI at Eden Park.

The incident unfolded at the start of the 41st over as the Black Caps struggled to extend their innings. Tickner, batting at No. 11, had frustrated the visitors with an aggressive cameo of 34 from 23 deliveries.

After playing and missing an attempted pull shot against Brar’s opening short delivery, Tickner swung his bat in mild self-reproach. The towering Indian seamer fixed a deadpan gaze on the batter before playfully gesturing how to properly execute the stroke. Tickner grinned back and pointed his bat toward the stumps, daring the bowler to hit them.

Brar had the ultimate reply on the very next delivery. Sticking to his short-pitch barrage, the 26-year-old right-armer bent his back to dig another steep ball into the Eden Park surface. Tickner fell straight into the trap, attempting another wild hook. The ball caught a thick top edge and drifted harmlessly behind the wicket, where KL Rahul tracked the skier to his left and completed a comfortable catch.

Instead of aggressive send-offs, Brar broke into a broad grin, pointing playfully back at the departing batter as his teammates mobbed him in celebration. Tickner offered an amused smile of surrender while walking off, acknowledging the tactical checkmate.

The wicket bundled New Zealand out for 185, capping Brar’s impressive figures of 3 for 44.

Relentless India seamers rip through New Zealand in Auckland ODI opener

New Zealand’s batting innings in the opening ODI at Eden Park has been completely derailed by a disciplined and relentless Indian bowling attack after being asked to bat first.

Despite brief rebuilding efforts through middle-order partnerships, the Black Caps struggled to gain momentum against disciplined lines, with tight spells from Anshul Kamboj and Axar Patel choking the run rate. Arshdeep Singh (4/70) and Gurnoor Brar (3/44) ran through the lineup as wickets tumbled at regular intervals, preventing any sustained partnership from taking root.

Glenn Phillips fought to anchor the innings with a gritty 30, but persistent pressure from India’s bowling unit kept New Zealand on the back foot throughout the innings. However, Blair Tickner’s quickfire 34 off 23 deliveries helped the hosts set a 186-run target for India to chase.
