How to get Epona in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (and use her properly)

This post was originally published on this site.

Epona in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is Link’s horse that you can unlock by completing the Malon’s Friend side quest. She enables you to travel across Hyrule Field much faster and is also required for certain activities, including the Obstacle Course and Horseback Archery minigames. However, unlocking her is completely optional, and you can even complete the main storyline without her.

That said, this guide explains how to get Epona, ride her, and call her to your location in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

How to get Epona

You can unlock Epona in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time by completing the Malon’s Friend side quest at Lon Lon Ranch. However, you will first need to meet Malon and wake up her father, Talon, during the main story of the game to access this side quest.

You can meet Malon during your first visit to Hyrule Castle Town. She is located in the northern part of the city, inside the castle courtyard. Speak to her to receive a Weird Egg, which will eventually hatch into a Wake-Up Cucco.

Afterward, make your way into Hyrule Castle by sneaking past the guards to find Talon in the northeastern area of the castle. Once you’re there, simply equip the Wake-Up Cucco and use it to wake him up.

Following this segment, visit Lon Lon Ranch while playing as Child Link to trigger the Malon’s Friend side quest. Simply speak to her and learn Epona’s Song, which you will need to summon the horse later.

Now continue progressing through the main story until you obtain the Master Sword and become Adult Link, as the latter half of this side quest requires you to play as him. Return to Lon Lon Ranch to find that it is Ingo’s ranch now. At this point, speak to Ingo outside the corral and pay him money to ride the horses.

Once inside, play Epona’s Song using your Ocarina. She will run toward you, allowing you to mount her and practice riding around the corral. When you are ready, ride over to Ingo and speak to him. Afterward, defeat him in two races and leave with Epona to have her join you in your journey.

You can use Epona to travel much faster across Hyrule Field. She is particularly useful when completing objectives with time limits. However, do note that she cannot enter certain areas, including towns and dungeons. In such cases, she will remain near the entrance or gate when you try to take her into these locations.

Here are the controls for riding Epona in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time:

You can summon Epona where you are in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time by playing Epona’s Song using the Fairy Ocarina or Ocarina of Time. To learn Epona’s Song, talk to Malon three times during the day. She will eventually ask you to sing her mother’s song together.
