Richard Sherman criticized 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy for costly mistakes after the team’s 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Purdy threw two interceptions as San Francisco suffered its first defeat of the 2026 season.
The former 49ers cornerback expressed his disappointment through an X post. Beside Purdy, he also called out the team’s inability to protect the football and capitalize on opportunities.
Thanks for the submission!
“Brock Purdy with his 2nd INT of the day and that may be the nail in the coffin of this game. Too many mistakes on both side of the football. Turnovers, penalties and a missed PAT are going to be the headlines in this one. The Falcons have 10 points off of Turnovers and haven’t turned it over once,” Sherman tweeted.

Purdy’s second interception with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter ended a promising San Francisco drive. Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels tipped the quarterback’s pass to himself, giving Atlanta possession and ending comeback hopes.

“George Kittle has the ball punched out Jessie Bates to close this game out. 4th Turnover by the 49ers offense. Lost the turnover battle 0-4,” Sherman added, quoting the tweet.
The 49ers committed multiple errors, including two interceptions and two fumbles. Atlanta capitalized on the mistakes and forced four turnovers without committing one.
San Francisco also struggled with penalties. The team gave up valuable yardage, which helped Atlanta sustain scoring drives. Kicker Eddy Piñeiro’s missed extra point, following Kyle Juszczyk’s late touchdown, further complicated the comeback attempts.
Despite Brock Purdy completing 27 of 40 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown, his turnovers proved costly at critical moments. The quarterback had entered the game with only two interceptions through the 49ers’ first six games.
The loss was particularly disappointing because San Francisco had established an early lead and could have extended its perfect record.
Brock Purdy on first regular season loss to Falcons
Brock Purdy admitted the San Francisco 49ers must improve their ball security after Sunday’s loss to the Falcons.
Purdy reflected on his mistakes and explained he misread the coverage on his second interception.
“Linebacker was mugged up on the line of scrimmage, thought we had an alley outside to Jordan Watkins, and was going to throw, and it was there and thought it was going to be like a drive-by play,” Purdy said.
He also confessed that losing Christian McCaffrey, who sustained a thigh injury during the game, altered San Francisco’s offensive approach.
