Michael Carrick has brushed aside the idea of any “stigma” attached to Manchester United dropping into the Premier League’s bottom three, after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.
The question came at Stamford Bridge, where second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer condemned Manchester United to a ninth game without a win in all competitions, their longest winless run since 1988. Carrick’s side are 16th on seven points from nine league games, a point above the relegation zone with the rest of the round still to play.
Thanks for the submission!
Asked in his post-match press conference whether there would be a stigma attached to the 20-time English champions sitting in the bottom three, he said (via ESPN):
“Not for me, no. We’ve got to keep moving forward and winning games, simple as that.”
He then added:
“There’s no words that I’m going to say to you now that makes [being in the relegation zone] any difference, it’s not going to change it. We’ve got to move forward and win football matches, it’s as simple as that.”
Carrick was just as blunt on TNT Sports when asked whether he expected to still be in charge for Tuesday’s Champions League visit of Roma. “Yes,” he said.
Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 50th minute by running through the middle of United’s defence, and Lisandro Martinez was sent off after a second yellow card for a forearm into the face of Wesley Fofana at a corner. Palmer converted the resulting penalty in the 64th minute.
Carrick survived talks between Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada after the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, with ESPN reporting that sources described a “collective view” to give him and the players a chance to turn it around.
Manchester United star Bryan Mbeumo responds when asked if the players had let Carrick down
Bryan Mbeumo, the Cameroon forward, was asked by TNT Sports whether the Manchester United players had let Carrick down. He rejected the suggestion. He said (via Yahoo Sports)
“No, obviously not. I think the mentality was there right from the first minute. Harder with 10 men. We still trust everyone. With the men down, we still had some frustrations at the end. But I think we have done everything as a team today.”
He added:
“A lot of disappointment. I think we have done a lot of right things, especially in the first half when we could have been up one or two-nil.”
Mbeumo, who hit the bar in stoppage time, said the side still had “some bits” to fix at the training ground before a Champions League meeting with Roma and the visit of Aston Villa.
Up next for Manchester United is Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday (November 3).
