In addition to being one of the finest shortstops in the major leagues, Francisco Lindor was recently awarded for his philanthropy and community involvement, as he won the prestigious Roberto Clemente award on Monday.
Soon after, he revealed his wife, Katia‘s emotional reaction to the achievement.
“She was very excited. We both almost cried,” Lindor revealed. “Our eyes were watery. I know she’s been very passionate about it. She’s also out there in the community just as much as I am. She’s advocating for people to help others, guide others.”

“She’s the rock of our family and I’m very proud of the work she continues to do on a daily basis. This is something when our kids grow up, they’re gonna look back and say my mom and dad were very cool because they were blessing others and helping others.”
The Roberto Clemente Award is given annually by Major League Baseball (MLB) to the player who shows extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions both on and off the field.
“That’s what life is all about” – Francisco Lindor explains how he takes inspiration from Roberto Clemente, expresses desire to continue giving back to the community
After receiving this year’s Roberto Clemente award, Francisco Lindor talked about how he takes inspiration from such legendary figures, while also expressing his desire to continue giving back to the community.
“I’m glad there were people in life like Clemente, that set the path for me,” Lindor said. “I just follow them. For me, I love education, and she (wife Katia) loves the health side of things. We don’t really try to be recognized by the work we do in the communities.”
“But there is something that we get out of it. This award represents me, but also it represents my family. It represents my mom. Ultimately that’s what life is all about. Taking care of the people that actually need guidance and help.”
This year marks the first time a New York Mets player has won the honor since 2016, when outfielder Curtis Granderson won the award.
