The Golden State Valkyries made history on Saturday after they secured a 68-63 win in Game 7 over the Atlanta Dream to win the 2026 WNBA championship. The Valkyries became the first team in league history to win the championship without a single All-WNBA player on their roster.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Alexa Philippou shared the team’s latest achievement on X.
“The Valkyries became the first team to win the WNBA title without a single All-WNBA selection that season. But they clinched the championship on Saturday because they had the biggest star on the court. ‘Closing with 30, I mean, that’s f***ing incredible,” she tweeted.
Fans swarmed the post comments section with their opinions:
“They remind me of the 2004 Detroit Pistons. The team played as a whole with no ego and led with defense,” one fan said.
“Gabby Williams FA signing might go down as the greatest ever, holy,” another fan said.
“Shows what management and coaching can do. They put a stamp on it,” another fan commented.
Here are more reactions:
“You need dogs to win; that’s all it takes,” one fan commented.
“Two years to dominate? My desk job would still be stuck in onboarding. That’s some serious aura points right there,” another fan commented.
“This is what happens when you don’t build a roster based on vibes and sentiment and have a capable coach at the helm,” another fan said.
Golden State really pulled off the unthinkable as they became champions in their second year in the league. They entered the league as an expansion team in 2025, and after showing promise last season with a first-round exit, they returned to the big stage and finished the job this season.
Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase shares a motivational message after achieving a major career milestone
The Golden State Valkyries have a strong defensive philosophy, and their head coach, Natalie Nakase, is the reason behind it. On Saturday, Nakase joined Becky Hammon as one of the few coaches to have won a championship in their first two years as a head coach. After the Game 7 win, Nakase shared a motivational message with the fans in an on-court interview.
“This is for all people who have been underrated, misunderstood… this is proof that if you put all your heart and all your soul, you f****** win championships,” she said.
The former Aces assistant coach left Becky Hammon in 2024 to take on the expansion team’s head coaching job, and it proved to be the best decision of her career.
