Didier Deschamps responds after Manchester United approach him to replace Carrick: Reports

Didier Deschamps has no interest in replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United, according to Foot Mercato, leaving the Old Trafford hierarchy to look elsewhere.

The French outlet claims Manchester United contacted Deschamps recently to find out whether he would consider the job. The 58-year-old is said to have reservations about the club’s situation and is prepared to wait until next year before choosing his next move.

The reports point to the state of the club as a factor behind Deschamps’ decision. The Red Devils are 17th in the Premier League with seven points from nine games, outside the relegation places only on goal difference.

Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Roma in the Champions League was Manchester United’s first in 10 matches in all competitions. Carrick’s side trailed 2-0 inside 17 minutes at Old Trafford, and they had to rely on a re-taken Bruno Fernandes penalty to turn the game that was settled by Matheus Cunha’s late brace.

Deschamps has been out of work since his 14-year spell with France ended after this summer’s World Cup, where Les Bleus lost to Spain in the semifinals and then 6-4 to England in the third-place playoff. He has not coached a club since leaving Marseille in 2012. However, his record includes a Champions League final with Monaco and a Ligue 1 title at Marseille.

Aston Villa and Liverpool next as Carrick waits on his Manchester United future

Carrick will take charge of Sunday’s visit from Aston Villa, the last fixture before the international break, and Sky Sports News reported on Thursday that United would skip an interim appointment if they decide to make a change.

Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Fabian Hurzeler are the names in their thinking, while Unai Emery, who brings Villa to Old Trafford, is close to signing a new long-term deal at Villa Park.

After the break comes a trip to Liverpool, then Brentford at home and Newcastle away. United have won once in 10 matches, so none of those fixtures look comfortable for them.

As per reports, Manchester United are planning to assess Carrick’s future as manager at Old Trafford during the international break. The Red Devils’ hierarchy may have sounded Deschamps out as part of their plans in case they have to part ways with Carrick after the Aston Villa game.

Notably, Lisandro Martinez is suspended for the game on Sunday after the Argentine picked up a red card in the loss against Chelsea last time out.
