Pilot Picasso creates GTA 6 artwork using a plane’s flight route

As a tribute to the upcoming game, Benjamin Glasgow McDaniel III, widely known as the Pilot Picasso, has turned a multi-hour flight into GTA 6 artwork that spans the sky. The route traces a complex drawing across the map, and fans watched it take shape in real time.

The piece is the latest from the Bentonville, Arkansas pilot who has been doing aerial art for a while now. Below you can see what happened during his flight, what the GTA 6 artwork looks like, and other pieces he has made.

How the Pilot Picasso flew the GTA 6 artwork

The flight took off from Bentonville Municipal Airport. McDaniel flew his Cessna 182 RG, registration N1810R, by hand and used his flight-tracking path as the canvas for the GTA 6 logo and the artwork around it.

The flight data was captured and tracked live on platforms like Flightradar24 and AirNav Radar. Fans following along watched the portrait form in real time, as the continuous line work mapped out the shape of the character’s hair, posture, and the surrounding layout.

McDaniel spent upwards of 8 hours maneuvering through the skies to complete the GTA 6 artwork, which features stylized line work reflecting the game’s aesthetic, such as:

  • A helicopter
  • A bikini-clad woman
  • Palm trees
  • A croc
  • A car
  • The Grand Theft Auto VI logo

Who is the Pilot Picasso?

McDaniel, who is based in Bentonville, Arkansas, began creating GPS-tracked sky art in 2020. What started as a creative way to build flight hours also helped him keep his navigation skills sharp.

Before each flight, the Pilot Picasso carefully plans the coordinates to map out the intended design. Every turn and pattern is flown manually, without relying on autopilot, making precision essential. His GTA 6 artwork is the latest addition to an extensive portfolio of large-scale aerial artwork, which has previously featured:

  • Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa
  • Edvard Munch’s The Scream, which required a nearly 6-hour flight path
  • A highly detailed Spider-Man mask
  • The Ghostbusters logo for Halloween
  • A multi-layered fingerprint reading “You are loved”

With the release of GTA 6 just around the corner, it seems like there are new promotions coming out every day. This one is super creative and a great way to get people excited for the upcoming open-world title.
